Torah Portion December 1, 2012
| Vayishlach (Genesis 32:4-36:43)
Jacob and Esau reunite. However, just prior to their reunion, Jacob wrestles with what is perhaps a divine entity. Following this struggle, God changes Jacob's name to Israel. The portion also includes the story of the rape of Jacob's daughter, Dinah. Later, God appears to Jacob and promises him the Land of Israel. The portion concludes with the birth of Benjamin, the death of Rachel, and the death of Isaac.

Thanksgiving: In Praise of our GRS Family
Dear Friends,
During the period surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday, I was especially proud of our GRS family! Last Thursday, after filling my SUV to full capacity with the many donations of food, clothing and toys - including a brand new bicycle and sled, Cantor Sabrina and I drove to the Far Rockaway section of Queens to donate to those so impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Needless to say, it was heartbreaking to see the many individuals whose lives have been turned upside down by the devastation, yet heartwarming to feel the gratitude as they came to understand that Greenwich Reform Synagogue is truly with them.
I must also mention that my basement overflowed with the many generous donations to the Food Drive that we collected during the Fall Fest, which was subsequently delivered to Neighbor to Neighbor. No doubt that the generosity of our GRS family has made a difference for so many in our greater community.
And while our collections will continue, especially as we enter the holiday season, I would like to close my words by saying how delighted I was that late last Saturday night, GRSTY advisor, Allie Zur, and president, Daniella Sklarz, along with several other Greenwich teens, went by van to Manhattan, for a "Midnight Run," as they distributed warm clothing to homeless individuals.
We have so much to be thankful for, and following that which Judaism teaches, we are truly expressing our gratitude by caring for others!
Todah Rabbah - thank you all for your compassion and generosity, Rabbi Andy
B'Shalom, Rabbi Andy Rabbi Andrew R. Sklarz, MA, MSW, RJE With the goal of creating a GRS Memory Box, kindly send your photos, artifacts and personal pieces (in prose or poetry) which share significant moments in our history to Denise at denise@grs.org.

| Social Action - Inspirica's LifeWorks Holiday Gift Collection |
| |
The holiday season is not just about getting; it's also about giving! As Jews, we cherish our mitzvot of tzedakah - charity, and tikkun olam - repairing the world. Thousands of needy children will receive gifts this year because of your generosity!
Inspirica (formerly St. Luke's) is a social service agency in Stamford that helps families in lower Fairfield County who are affected by poverty, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS.
GRS has been a part of this program for years, so let's make this year no different. GRS has received holiday wish lists for 20 children between the ages of 3 and 10 and each one has 2 wishes.
Inspirica requests that at least one of the wishes be fulfilled, and the 2nd can be something age appropriate.
Inspirica would like the unwrapped gifts returned by December 11. They can be dropped of at the new office (1037 E. Putnam Ave. 2nd floor).

Tu B'Shevat Event Thursday, January 24, 2013 Greenwich Historical Society | | |
The Science of History: Tree Rings and the History They Reveal
Neil Pederson, PhD, Lamont Research Assistant Professor, Tree Ring Laboratory, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.
In celebration of the Jewish New Year for Trees, Tu B'Shevat, Dr. Pederson will lecture on how ancient trees and timbers from human structures are used to broaden our understanding of history. From the rise and fall of the Mongol Empire to the construction of buildings and boats locally and globally, trees are the environmental historians, which reveal events long faded from human memory and historical documents; including how the tree ring cores taken from the Bush-Holley house reveal its construction history.
Sponsored by the Greenwich Historical Society, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, the Bruce Museum, and the Greenwich Reform Synagogue.
Doors open at 6:30; lecture begins at 7:00 pm. Event will be held at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich, CT 06830-7157
Admission is free but reservations are suggested. Please call 203-869-6899, Ext. 10
