At a holiday gathering, when a friend learned what Heroes on the Water does for warriors, she told me her personal story...
PTSD killed her son 4 years ago after 3 tours of duty as a marksman in Iraq.
She described how he returned home dealing with the demons of combat. In Iraq, he had walked out of a commissary just before it was hit, killing his 4 buddies still inside. In a life or death situation he was forced to shoot 3 people and then watched as Iraqis drove over them in the road. Thoughts, guilt and nightmares invaded his life and stole his personal peace.
The anguish on her face spoke volumes - the wounds of war remain with her.
If there had been a Heroes on the Water program nearby for him, her son may have found the sense of peace and camaraderie that many warriors discover, and his life may have been saved.
