Ray, Jeremiah, and Sam join us in thanking you for your support of the HOW program, helping injured service members with their recovery.

The CBS DFW Profiles in Courage highlights their stories and how "...the highly unscientific kayak fishing therapy is changing lives, one cast at a time."

Veterans Day Celebration with Heroes on the Water

Brown's Creek Fish Camp and the North East chapter of Heroes on the Water (HOW) hosted the 2nd Annual Veterans Day celebration in style with a fun filled day which included: kayak fishing, dock fishing, a live band, face painting, bounce ship, fish painting, and a delicious BBQ meal provided by Callahan's BBQ.

The day began with 96 people taking to the water for some kayak fishing.  It didn't matter if you were a first time kayak fisherman or a seasoned pro, the day was about relaxing and having fun on the water while celebrating our nation's heroes and the sacrifice they make for our country.

 HOW Volunteers
are making a difference in communities across the U.S.A.

Thank you for your service!

FREEDOM CAPTURED.

Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.

For Marine Thomas Bailey it is kayak fishing..."Yes it was FREEDOM to leave that thing on the shore today while I was out on the water with Barrett and Eric. THANKS GUYS!!!" That 'thing' is his wheelchair.

Thomas was paralyzed in an accident and has fought long and hard to regain as much of his upper body function as he could, but paddling a
kayak on his own was not going to be possible.

HOW volunteers got Thomas into a tandem kayak for a ride around the launch area which was a significant achievement. But after the outing, volunteers felt they could provide Thomas an even better experience.

After days of bouncing ideas around, the team decided on the best kayak and equipment to give Thomas the support he needed and they customized a setup so he could reach the rod and be able to fish.

The final piece to the puzzle was tying off a pair of kayaks on each side of his kayak so that the outside anglers could provide the propulsion, steering, anchoring, baiting and casting.

In the end the fish weren't on board with the project, but it didn't dampen the mood of the day and everyone had fun. Best of all, Thomas enjoyed the FREEDOM of being out on the water with the HOW Emerald Coast Chapter.

HOW volunteers are able to help warriors like Thomas throughout the year because of the financial support of people like you.

The need is great with many wounded service members returning to our communities facing a new battle to regain a sense of normalcy and hope.

Thank you for your support!

HOW Volunteers Impacting Lives

Thank you seems inadequate to recognize these remarkable people who put smiles on the faces of warriors and their families week in and week out.

They shoulder great responsibility in managing a Heroes on the Water
(HOW) chapter--from administrative duties, taking care of the gear, and ensuring safety procedures are followed, to  being there to listen and touch the life of each veteran who participates.

"Earlier this year one veteran pointed out that the camaraderie of the volunteers as a key part of making HOW so effective for him. He also noted their attention to everyone's safety."

Many of our volunteers are veterans whose lives have been changed by HOW and they now want to give back and reach out and help their comrades.

Jason in Louisiana says that kayak fishing saved his life and now helps others with the HOW program. And Kody, a former participant and now the coordinator for the HOW Brooke Army Medical Center program, gets warriors out on the water kayak fishing as part of their recovery.

We are grateful for the 1,100+ dedicated volunteers from coast to coast who have provided 7,000+ veteran days on the water with HOW since 2007. Thank you to all who have selflessly served!
