SUICIDE PREVENTION TASK FORCE

2-1-1 has been involved with the suicide prevention task force for about a year. Suicide can be a difficult subject to talk about and often makes people feel uncomfortable. Suicide attempts and completions are a major health crisis in the state of Colorado and El Paso County has accounted for one-eighth of all suicide deaths in our state. There were 329 suicide deaths and approximately 6,282 suicide attempts in El Paso County between 2008 and 2010 and suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-44 year olds in El Paso County. For every death by suicide, there are four times as many who are hospitalized after an attempt. From 2008 to 2010, the estimated cost of hospitalization for suicide attempts in El Paso County was $13,960,000. The goal of the task force is to create awareness of this health crisis and work together to put preventative programs in place to lower our high suicide rates and hopefully get to a place where we stamp out suicide in El Paso County.
