A-TISKET, A-TASKET...
Ent Raises Campaign Dollars with Baskets and More! |
Cornerstone Partner Ent Federal Credit Union's creativity was unparalleled this year -- as was their revenue. From Candy Grams, Jean Days and an Ice Cream Sundae Social to their much-anticipated "Battle of the Baskets," campaign revenues soared to $179,076 -- with $31,497.06 coming in from special events.
Agency site-visits and volunteer efforts such as "Pack the Cart" allowed employees to see first hand the difference they could make when supporting Pikes Peak United Way.
And with top execs like President Charles Emmer and Campaign Coordinators Tanan Miles and Bob Walla personally on-hand to serve ice cream and collect school supplies, it was obvious to employees and customers alike that Ent's commitment to PPUW was sincerely felt throughout the ranks.

Dr. Mark Hatchell, superintendent for School District 20, accepted the traveling trophy for Most Outstanding Academic Campaign from Sponsor and Assistant Vice President at UMB, Rhett Brengarth. District 20 raised over $10,000 for PPUW during the 2011-2012 school year. |
MAYOR SPEAKS AT WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP LUNCH-N-LEARN |
They say if you book an interesting speaker, you'll have a full house, and such was the case when Pikes Peak United Way's WLC kicked off its 2013 Lunch-N-Learn series with Mayor Steve Bach as keynote.
Over 70 enthusiastic guests packed the Tim Gill Center for lunch to get a true insider's take on the issues and opportunities facing our city -- and to thank surprise honorees Jan Weiland, past chairman of the WLC, and Mary Beth Williams, past chairman of the Community Engagement Committee, for their dedication and service to the organization during its formative years.

2-1-1 OFFERS VALUABLE INFORMATION ON TAX CREDITS AND FREE FILING
It's tax time again, and as in the past, 2-1-1 is the best source for information about valuable tax credits and FREE tax preparation. |
- If your income was less than $50,000 in 2012, you could be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) -- a special tax benefit from the federal government for low- to moderate-income families with children. If you're eligible, the EITC could mean a refund of up to $5,000!
- In addition, you may qualify for FREE tax return preparation. Colorado has 135 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites, 15 in Colorado Springs, where free tax preparation and e-filing are provided to taxpayers making less than $50,000. Also, anyone with an adjusted gross income of up to $58,000 can prepare and electronically file their federal tax return through the IRS' "Free File" Program.

YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST
Believe it or not, well over 4,900 individuals visited Pikes Peak United Way last year. |
For valued volunteers, outside agency members, corporate partners and guests, safety remains a high priority. It is for this reason that we ask everyone to sign in at the front desk. If meeting in one of our conference rooms, you'll then be directed where to go. If scheduled to meet with staff, you'll be issued a badge and escorted or instructed to your destination.
For some it might seem like an unnecessary process, but at Pikes Peak United Way we think your safety -- and that of our building -- are worth it, so please indulge our efforts.

HOMELESS IN COLORADO SPRINGS |
On January 30th volunteers and Pikes Peak United Way staff met at the Marian House Soup Kitchen to survey unsheltered homeless and low-income residents of El Paso County for the annual Point in Time Survey (PIT).
Housing and Urban Development requires that all communities receiving HUD funding conduct an annual PIT survey, as it helps track the ever changing needs and structure of the homeless population -- such as the need for more low income housing in our community. By gauging the number of homeless residents, and the number of residents who are low income and at risk of becoming homeless, we as a community can look at what changes need to be made to programs and services in order to aid those individuals in becoming housed and self-sufficient.
This year, over 454 homeless residents participated in the survey, receiving new socks and candy for their participation courtesy of Gary Peacock and our friends at Walmart.
