Asking Without Hesitating

By Lori Schumaker

Three years ago we brought our daughter home from an orphanage half-way around the world. We knew we loved her even before we met her. We knew God handpicked her to be a part of our family. But what we didn't know is that a multitude of undiagnosed medical issues and the effects of life in an institution had caused a level of hurt within her that would leave our family desperate and in chaos.

Prayer had brought our sweet girl to us and we knew prayer would continue to get us through her healing. Our close friends and family who had been by our sides throughout the entire process would be praying as well. Our Church was such a support. Many of our close friends were there and the community, worship, and message would always come through during the toughest of times to help us draw closer to Jesus and find His strength. But there was one critically powerful component of what Central offered that, strangely, we had never utilized.

Until one morning God used some special people to orchestrate what I had so easily set aside.

What Happens When We Work Together?

Ministries Like Special Ops Are Formed

By Paul Covert

For three months or so Gil Nisleit and I have been talking about how the First Impressions Team in Gilbert and the Prayer Ministry Team in Gilbert could work together better.  We came up with an idea we call "Special Ops."

What are Special Ops?

Special Ops is an attempt to raise awareness in five areas of ministry at Central that will make all of us better and more usable by God.

We would focus on three prayer areas and two new places of service. Here is a breakdown of both:

The three areas of prayer are:

  1. Prayer for the "seekers" who attend our services.
  2. Prayer for attenders to feel the "love" of God.
  3. Prayer for opportunities to "care/connect" with attenders.

The two additional areas of service are:

  1. "Observing" in the service intercession in the prayer room
  2. "Observing" as a prayer partner at the end of a service.

How would Special OPS work?

At every service, Gil would have some small cards roughly the size of the name badge you wear on your lanyard.  Each card would have one of the words above on it. Team members select a card.

A Call To Pray: Love Sudan

The Prayer Ministry at Central loves to try new things and expose you to new and fresh prayer opportunities. Your next chance to join in on something special will be on Thursday, August 21, when Central will host a night of prayer for the nation of Sudan. We are calling it "Love Sudan."

It is no secret that Sudan is divided by civil war, and Christians in Sudan are persecuted and murdered. They need our love and our prayers.  For this event, we are teaming up with Central's Global Outreach Department, other churches, and interested organizations.  One of those churches is a Sudanese church here in the Valley.

We will host the prayer gathering at the Chapel on Central's Mesa Campus (933 N. Lindsay Rd. Mesa, AZ 85213) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, August 21.  There will be worship (some of which we hope will be led by the Sudanese church), stations for prayer for Sudan, and corporate times of prayer.

Love Sudan will move to the Sudanese church on Friday, August 22, with prayer from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  and then on Saturday, August 23, it will move to Church of the Nations in Phoenix. This night of prayer will begin at noon and go into the evening for those who can participate.

Ministry Spotlight:

When you have experienced sadness, a deep loss, faced a terminal illness, or your life wavered in uncertainty, did you have someone at your side to encourage you and walk with you in your struggles?

Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." Taking care of the Lord's sheep requires us as followers of Jesus to care for others, even when they are in crisis. Walking with people through their hard times is the heart of the SoulCare Ministry at Central.

For people experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment, SoulCare provides its Advisors, who are deeply passionate about taking care of God's sheep by demonstrating Christ's love and care to people during a time of need.

SoulCare Advisors coordinate one-to-one meetings to provide care to people going through tough times, and meet once a week for about an hour.

Leading the SoulCare Ministry at Central is its Director, Judy Shark, who has been an advisor since 1987, and has trained many Servant Ministers who have discovered their God given gifts in care, listening, mercy, encouragement, and compassion.

Sudanese Christian Woman Who Faced Death Penalty Currently Safe

After marrying a Christian, a Sudanese woman was accused of adultery and abandoning the Muslim faith. Many Christians around the world were praying for her. Here are three reports that tell us of her struggles and her faith. Please keep praying for her. Children Crossing Borders: Sound Advice On A Divisive Immigration Issue: Pray!

Our nation, with all its faults and flaws, continues to receive a multitude of unmerited blessings through God's grace. It's certainly no wonder that so many people want to get into the U.S.A. This news story includes comments from a person who puts himself in the shoes of the parents of the children who have crossed our boarders illegally. What would caring parents do? "...I think about the way we would feel with her being so far away from us. I think we would drop to our knees in prayer and we would pray for someone to help..." Read more at kvue.com.
