The Holiday Blues

by Jack Begley

While the holiday season brings great joy to some, others may find themselves physically and emotionally drained. While extroverts tend to be energized, introverts can find themselves exhausted. The extra demand the holidays put on our time, energy, and resources creates stress and anxiety. Some people handle this well while others struggle.

Many people believe that the added stress at this time of year brings about the "holiday blues" which leads to an increase in depression and suicide. Researchers have found that depression and suicide actually decrease during the holidays. It's easy to think that while the holiday cheer can bring joy to many, it only serves to make the lonely feel lonelier, or that hopelessness is magnified, or the added stress might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Read More Here

Cathy Retires

- Sort of...

Retirement is not listed in the Bible anywhere that I know.  In fact, lots of significant calls came to people even older than I am...hard to imagine! Check out Moses and Noah, for instance. And, God must have something in mind for me, having arranged my ordination pretty late in life. So, I need to explain something here.

I will retire the end of this month from being on staff as a paid member of personnel here at Central, but I won't be quitting anything the Lord may want me to continue doing. I love caring, serving, praying, teaching. Officially, I will continue here at Central as an "on-staff volunteer."

For the Prayer Team, that means I will continue as a part of Prayer Leadership, helping Paul with the distaff side of things like E-Accountability for the women, and prayers with women, and Life Coaching women, for instance. Read More Here!

Spotlight
Spotlight on Web Prayer

Many of you have sent in prayer requests to be placed on the Web Prayer Page via the Connection Card resource attached to our former worship service programs.  Now, using our new journals, that card is only available once during a series or for the duration of that journal.

The Web Prayer Team counts it a privilege to pray for our members and guests and is missing hearing from you as frequently as we had been previously. Each of your requests from the Connection Cards had been entered on the Web Prayer Page so many could join together united in praying for you. That still is true, but, now, we are concerned we might be missing some of your prayer requests.

There are two ways to get prayer requests to the Web Prayer Page: submitting a Connection Card prayer request, or entering the request on the Web Prayer Page yourself.

If any of you would like personally to enter a prayer request, here are the instructions for doing so:

*Go to Central's Web site,www.CentralAZ.com
*Click on the "Getting Involved" tab at top of the home page
*Click on "Prayer" when those options appear
*Click on "Need Prayer?"
*Fill in the form provided
*Select the category of prayer you are entering (Health, Finances, etc.)      Read More Here

President Offers Prayers and Scriptures After Shootings

Following the shocking shooting deaths of children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newton, CT., President Obama spoke at a vigil, offering condolences to the community and the nation.  "Here in Newtown, I come to offer the love and prayers of a nation. I am very mindful that mere words cannot match the depths of your sorrow, nor can they heal your wounded hearts. I can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief; that our world too has been torn apart; that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you, we've pulled our children tight."  Throughout this very emotional and moving speech, the President quoted Bible passages, including "'Let the little children come to me,' Jesus said, 'and do not hinder them - for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'"  Watch the full speech at washingtonpost.com and read the complete manuscript at cnn.com

A Prayer Service in Aftermath of Clackamas Shooting

Just days before the shootings in Connecticut, people were seeking comfort following the shootings in Clackamas, Oregon.  During a prayer service on the evening after the Clackamas shooting, a pastor said, "Coming to grips with a tragedy is difficult when people feel alone."  He then said, "But God is present in the darkness. That's the story of Christmas. God comes to this planet and promises, 'I will be with you in the darkness and evil.' We have to work through it and work in spite of it." Prayer On the Edge of the "Fiscal Cliff"

By the time this edition of our Prayer Newsletter is released, the "Fiscal Cliff" issue may have been resolved. Hopefully, it has. However, either way, it is good to know that Congress opens with prayer and that the opening prayer often asks for specific solutions to our nation's many challenges.  Read an LA Times article which includes an excerpt of the Senate Chaplain's prayer regarding "fiscal cliff talks."

Too Cute: A Prayer in Spite of Interference

The Bible tells us to pray but, as this video demonstrates, sometimes saying a prayer seems almost impossible, or, at least, very difficult.
