My "other" career is Vice President of Properties and Risk Management for Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. It is a volunteer position. Why am I so engaged? The Boy Scouts completely and profoundly changed my life as an adolescent, and I would like to see their programs do the same for today's youngsters (both boys and girls). Suffolk County Council serves over 12,000 youth with over 2,000 adult volunteers and a small paid staff.
Not many people know this, but each Council is completely self-sufficient, and receives absolutely no funding from the Boy Scouts of America. Every year we are starting from scratch to raise our operating budget. This puts me in a squeeze trying to maintain and improve our Scout camp in Baiting Hollow, and that is the reason that I am reaching out for help. We are delighted, of course, to accept monetary donations.
Click here for a link. But we can also use donations of construction materials, labor from contractors, and other gifts-in-kind (items that would normally be part of our budget).
If you have a son or daughter in Scouting, you KNOW the value of the program! We have ambitious plans for Baiting Hollow Scout Camp this year that include two new cabins. Can you help out with volunteer time, or a donation of equipment, materials or labor? I would love to hear from you, and have you as part of our Scouting team. All donations are tax deductible.
In this month's issue I answer the most often asked question in commercial real estate, "What is the difference between a net lease, gross lease, and a full-service lease?" Even after all my explanations, the important lesson to be learned is that you must always confirm the expenses included or excluded from your rent payment. Do not rely on these terms alone to make your decisions.
