Dear Friends,
It was with tremendous pleasure that we were able to assist the United States Marines with their annual Toys for Tots program. Thanks to Andy Dorman of our office, and one of our clients, Rob Ballas of Scott Cable Communications (who donated their warehouse space), the Marines have a beautiful and spacious Long Island warehouse for their program during the holiday season. See our lead article below, and nice work, Andy!
Are you ready for winter? The snow will be flying shortly. If you would like a checklist for your commercial property, let us know. We can send you a written checklist, or help you take care of it. It is important to have someone take a look at your flat roof and make sure that all debris has been cleared and that the drains are clear. Ice dams and ponding water are disastrous for flat roofs. There is also still time to take care of split seams and other roof maladies before the worst of the winter weather is upon us.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. The day represents family and abundance, and I also appreciate the opportunity to reflect on all that has come into my life, and give thanks for what has been provided. The second part of the word "Thanksgiving" is "giving", and I believe that when all is said and done, we find the most satisfaction when we give. I hope that each one of you has much to be thankful for, and much to give!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
"Oh the possibilities!"
David G. Hunt

Sgt. Ricardo Martinez, Toys for Tots Coordinator;
Andy Dorman, Associate Broker, Hunt Corporate Services, Inc.
A Hunt client agreed to donate space to this year's Marine-sponsored Toys for Tots program. It all began when Hunt broker Andy Dorman's phone rang, and a Sergeant Martinez was on the line. He was calling about warehouse space for the Marines' Toys for Tots program. The Marine sergeant had noticed that Hunt Corporate Services represents multiple warehouse owners, and was a logical source of potential space. "Most property owners aren't interested," said Sergeant Martinez, "because we're only asking for a short term lease to store toys through the Christmas season." But Dorman, an Army veteran, had a client who happens to be a Navy veteran and happens to own a large warehouse in Farmingdale with some available space. Dorman called owner Rob Ballas. "Of course we have space for the Marines," was Mr. Ballas' immediate response. "They have done so much for this country." Toys for Tots was begun 68 years ago by a Marine reserve officer and has since become one of the world's most visible charities. Each year millions of dollars worth of toys collected by Marines are distributed to needy children all over the world. In 2013 alone, for example, Toys for Tots gave over 16.8 million toys to seven million less fortunate children. It continues to be a top-rated charity, which means over 97 percent of donations actually go to the needy, while only three percent is spent on fundraising and overhead. First Lady Michelle Obama recently has been one of the charity's most visible supporters. Over the years, Toys for Tots spokespersons included John Wayne, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Clint Eastwood, and Brooke Shields. The Marines' Toys for Tots budget includes lease payments, but Rob Ballas, a principal of cable TV equipment company Scott Cable Communications, Inc. based in Farmingdale, was having none of it. "We're not charging rent to the Marines," said Mr. Ballas. "They remain our first line of defense in this country, and they have my deepest respect." Sergeant Martinez, a two-tour veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, was more than gracious: "We love that a couple of veterans got involved in providing space for this year's program." To drop off a toy is easy: Simply come to 127 Allen Boulevard in Farmingdale any day of the week from 9 to 4, or go to www.toysfortots.org and find a drop-off location. A dropdown menu labeled "Select a State" will guide you to your local Toys for Tots campaign, in this case Farmingdale, NY. The local campaign also has a phone number: 516-847-5848. Marines will be on site to accept your contribution. If you prefer to make a financial donation, again go to www.toysfortots.org and find your local Toys for Tots campaign. At the local website, each visitor may also find information about local events, how to become a collection point for the local campaign, how to register for assistance, and how to donate directly to a local campaign.
