September 2014 Vol. 6 Issue 2
Dear Friends,

Exactly fifty years ago I met a man who profoundly changed my life.  His name was Charles Graff.  I was only twelve years old at the time.  What I didn't know was that he was decorated WW II veteran who helped liberate German concentration camps, that he had worked his way from an extremely poor background through engineering school, and that he was the chief electrical engineer on the Saturn V rocket that put our astronauts on the moon.  What I did know was that he was my Scoutmaster.  He took an interest in me, encouraged me, taught me all sorts of incredible skills like leadership, introduced me to faith, and set an example, by his living, of who I wanted to become.

Almost certainly you can also name a person who impacted your life in a similar way.  Perhaps it was a teacher, a grandparent, or a coach.  Someone, other than a parent, who saw you for who you were, and believed in you.  The  power of mentorship is enormous.

I am often asked why I spend as much as time as I do working with Boy Scouts, or mentoring students in the Earn & Learn program in area high schools.  This is why:  I believe it is our young people who will eventually solve many of the worlds problems, and that these issues will only be solved by a higher level on consciousness.  Mentorship is an essential element of human growth and has been around as long as we have.

A great program in our area is The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island.  If you are serious about mentoring, check out their organization and "The Mentoring Matters Conference" at LIU-CW Post next March.  I have been to two of these conferences and found them invaluable.  More information is available at www.mentorkids.org.

"Oh the possibilities!"

Budget Quotations VS. Contract Bids
by David G. Hunt

Q:  We are contemplating a comprehensive renovation of our existing office space, and would like to get some idea of the cost. Should we be getting multiple bids?

A:  Yes, you should eventually get multiple construction bids, but that is not what you need right now!

If you are planning commercial construction or renovation, there are two types of construction estimates. You need to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of both. A "budget quotation" is a rough estimate of the costs of construction which is prepared without a lot of detailed information on the quality or type of materials. A "contract bid" is a price for which the contractor is prepared to build, and is usually based on ... Click here for full article
