Gardening Solutionz Newsletter

Autumn 2013

Greetings!

Another Ellerslie International Flower Show done and dusted.  This year our sponsorship of the Emerging Designs category grew to another level and we offered sponsorship of $3000 worth of plants to each of the nine students competing. On top of this sponsorship we supplied our yet to be released plants to Ben Hoyles gold award winning garden - 'A Kiss From Akaroa' and site beautification in the corporate hosting and Edible Ellerslie.  I thoroughly enjoyed the show and although there were less exhibitor show gardens this year, I have come away inspired and ready to tackle my own garden!

Plant Of The Month

This month I have two - Dianella Blue Twist and                  Phormium Sweet Mist

These two relative newcomers to the market are from the Foliage First range from Australia and are renowned for their low water requirements and very easy care nature - perfect landscaping plants that will withstand long, hot and dry summers!

Have you heard of Xeriscaping?  After the summer we have had - this should be the new hip word on every gardeners tongue!  Xersicaping refers to landscaping and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental water from irrigation.  These two plants are perfect examples of new breeding that thinks for the future:

Dianella Blue Twist

This twisty little number has the most wonderful qualitites for the modern garden.  It's a strappy not stroppy ornamental plant that will help create a tropical and lush feel in your garden.  This toughie is a goodie for those wanting an extremely easy care option.  It is an ornamental flax lily; distinguished by its blue twisting foliage and is cold hardy.  It is also a great accent plant and can be underplanted with lower growing foliage plants.  This winter I will be planting one in a pot at my front door with an underplanting of orange pansies - this should give me a burst of colour on the dull days.

Phormium Sweet Mist

This would have to be one of the most compact phormiums on the market.  Phormium Sweet Mist is a little bronze number that will behave well in any situation.  As a modern variation of the phormium

it adds an exciting choice for landscape design with its low growing habit and bold bronze tonings.  Suited to the smaller modern garden with its size of just 35 - 40 cm tall, it is a great sample for pots and courtyards.

The methodology behind both these plants selection - was to have stong root structure and require low to no irrigation.  Let's keep our water as a precious resource; whilst providing the garden with colour and foliage for 365 days a year.

Both Dianella Blue Twist and Phormium Sweet Mist are available from all good garden centres.

Emerging Designs At Ellerslie - can you try any of these ideas at home?

This is one category at Ellerslie International Flower Show that really shone this year and I came away enthused and wanting a 4 metre x 4 metre courtyard!

Two of our nursery staff  Max and Johanna competed in this section of the show and we are incredibly proud of them achieving a bronze award.  Their garden showcased a number of our new spring 2013 plants and by all accounts of the  comments from show visitors that I spoke to, it was a garden design that could be incorporated into virtually any courtyard.

Just When We Thought We Had Seen It All - A Fire Roars Through The Nursery

We breed our plants tough in Canterbury and just to prove that - what do you get when you cross a strong norwest wind with a flare up from a old burn off from over the road?  - a fire that rips through neighbouring properties and our nursery!

Garvineas     Tunnel House

Some very unhappy Gerberas   Another tunnel house gone

We were a lot luckily than our neighbouring properties and although all our shelter belts and tunnel houses have been burnt to a crisp and some plant varieties cindered, all staff were evacuated and got out safely.

Pink Fluffy Balls of Colour - Armeria Pretty Petite

PrettyPetite   Armeria PrettyPetite

This relative newcomer to the market is part of a new generation of Armeria that is bred for better performance with bolder colours which appear over a much longer period.   Armeria Pretty Petite is a gorgeous matt forming plant which smothers itself in globe like fowers on leafless stems.  Armerias are very forgiving plants in the garden and will reward you with an almost year round display of their bold flowers -  as you can see in the photos above, it is a great border plant or looks just as good in a pot.

Armeria Pretty Petite will be available in garden centres in time for Mothers Day.

Our Winners: Congratulations to Paula Johnson and Trish Walker - who both won a Petunia Raspberry Blast in our last competition.  And a huge congratulations to the 18 winners of  a Petunia Raspberry Blast plant in the Tui Times competition (there are too many winners names to list).

This time we have a Dianella Blue Twist to give away to a lucky winner, so remember to click on the competition section of this newsletter to be in with a chance to win.

Question: Hi there, I have tomato plants which are curling up. Also my beans and even weeds. My sister thinks I have a virus in my soil.  How can I find out?  I have taken photos but don't know who I can submit these to.

Tui

Answer:  Hi Tui

Thanks for your email.  There are a couple of websites that you could send the photos to - NZ Gardener magazine has a section on gardening advice, problems etc - have a look at their website at www.nzgardener.co.nz and use their 'contact us' section, alternatively you could try Megan

www.tuigarden.co.nz and contact them under their 'contact us'.  If you can't attach your photos initially they should be able to give you an email address to send them to.  Otherwise, if you can take your photos or a sample of your plants to your local garden centre they should be able to recommend how to fix/resolve the problem.

Kind regards,

Gardening Solutionz
