Spring 2012

Greetings!

Wow, spring has sprung and the garden centres have been busy.  Here at the nursery it becomes a task of trying to keep up.  Over winter we had a brainwave or what we call a wheelie good idea and popping up now in garden centres nationwide are hot pink wheelie bins planted with our favourite petunia - Raspberry Blast.  These displays have proved a hit and demand has had us run off our feet.  If you havent already got a Petunia Raspberry Blast -  this is one plant that is sure to please.

Plant Of The Month

Petunia Raspberry Blast

Our favourite is back this spring and appearing now in garden centres around New Zealand - is hot pink wheelie bins planted with Petunia Raspberry Blast - and what is surprising most customers is that there is only one plant planted in these wheelie bins.   If you are after colour in your garden and are on the look out for a true performer - this

perennial is it!

SuperCal Petchoas - Tongue Twisting Delights!

Cross a petunia with a calibrachoa and what do you get?  A SuperCal Petchoa of course.  This tongue twisting series combines the best characteristics of the two to give maximum outdoor garden performance and vigour.  SuperCal Petchoas have a mounding habit and will flower continuously from spring to late autumn.  They perform well in most weather conditions and will quickly form a low mound 40 cm high by 80 cm wide.  Did you know that calibrachoas typically have a sticky foliage - but not SuperCal Petchoas - their breeding has eradicated this so when their flowers drop they no longer stick to the foliage and look unattractive, they simply fall right off the plant.

              SuperCal Blue

With seven colours to choose from there is a colour to suit everyone - my favourites are velvet and blue!

Lavender

Once again Lavender is proving a incredibly popular choice this spring/summer and some of our most popular favourites are:

Ruffles Lavender:

A recent introduction, the Ruffles series are a wonderful combination of compact habit and massed flowers in sensational colours, from the traditional to the delicate combination of bicolours.  Ruffles are named because of the chunky bracts above the flower heads are distinctively rippled along their margins.  Their compact and tidy habit make these a ideal choice for smaller garden spaces, containers and hedges.  Four scrumptious colours are available - Sugarberry (mauve and pink), Raspberry (pink), Blueberry (deep mauve and purple), Boysenberry (musky pink with swirling white centres).

Stoechas Major:

One of the best lavenders available which produces an abundance of rich dark purple flowers from early spring through  to late summer.    Stoechas major is ideal hedging, looks great in a decorative pot, mass planted or as a general garden plant. Perfect for cottage garden,  Stoechas major will grow to approximately 60 cm x 60 if desired.

 Lavenders in Akaroa

Hidcote Blue:

This English lavender has a compact habit producing a dense mass of short stemmed blooms with dark blue, button like flowers in late spring through into the summer months.  Its evergreen and hardy natures makes it superb mass planted, ideal in dried flower arrangements, as a general garden plant and renowned for its fragrance - great for cooking with.  Hidcote Blue will grow to approximately 30 cm by 30 cm if desired and performs best in full sun.

Finally Impatiens For The Sun - SunPatiens

Arriving in garden centres now is the much anticipated SunPatiens series.  These little beauties are a sun tolerant variety of the tried and true favourite annual.  These remarkable plants showcase a breakthrough in breeding that results in a sun loving, thrive in heat impatiens that explode with colour from spring through to frost.

With eye catching flowers, dark green or brightly variegated foliage SunPatiens are flowering powerhouses that will flaunt their brilliant flowers beautifully.  Look out for these stunners over the next few weeks - their yellow sun label shouldn't be too hard to miss.

Question: Hello, we have a new 12 m long 1.2 m high retaining wall with lawn at the top.  Its in a sunny positon by the coast.  We'd like something  that grows about 30 cm high but will also trail down the wall.  We are quite happy to have the same species along here for maximum impact of colour - it also needs to be hardy and evergreen.  We have been advised lithospermum Grace Ward - which looks perfect except our home is painted blue and was hoping for a new colour to be introduced.  Also Grevillea Bronze rambler had been suggested but we are a little worried about it attracting bees.
Cheers Tanya

Answer:  Hi Tanya

Thanks for your email.  Lithospermum Grace Ward, Rosmary Prostrata or Irene would be good choices for cover and trailing habit however all three have blue/lavender coloured flowers.  As an alternative you could try a new release Grevillea Firecracker - this little number has an explosion of fiery red coloured flowers for a stunning show in a garden landscape.  It is fairly compact and has an evergreen foliage soft to the touch.  Its extensive flowering period from spring through to summer would provide great colour plus it is great for coastal regions and low water gardens and requires very little maintenance.  Its is extremely hardy in most soil types which are well draining.  It grows to approx 40 cm high and spread of 80 cm.  Firecracker will also attract the birds and is available now in garden centres.
