Der Rathskeller's Mural Masterpieces
Visit an Artistic Underworld
It's the stuff of fairy tales, mythology, and perhaps even your nightmares. Christopher Ulrich's surreal and fantastical series of murals leap from the cellar walls at Der Rathskeller, a below-ground bar at Old Pasadena's Der Wolfskopf. A backdrop of Bavarian forests, Teutonic battles, and nautical scenes highlight hobgoblins, ogres, jousting frogs, minotaurs, leering skeletons... countless characters all whimsically participating in a collective bacchanal.

Ulrich, a Los Angeles-based

artist, spent nearly a year creating the original artworks and, in a nod to their bar setting, cleverly incorporated brand imagery from breweries and distilleries, including Hendrick's Gin (see detail on newsletter banner), Espolón Tequila (image at right), and Germany's Ayinger Brewery. The frescoes lend a dark, underworld ambiance to the intimate establishment. Come see for yourself! Der Rathskeller is open 8:00pm-2:00am Wed-Sun, serving cocktails and 20 craft beer taps from upstairs. Der Wolfskopf opens for weekend brunch at 9:30am and will also play host to Make Music Pasadena as a supporting stage on Saturday, June 11!
