"I HAVE BEEN CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST;

IT IS NO LONGER I WHO LIVE, BUT CHRIST LIVES IN ME;

AND THE LIFE WHICH I NOW LIVE IN THE FLESH

I LIVE BY FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD,

WHO LOVED ME AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR ME."

"To Him Who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious Presence without fault and with great joy - to the Only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen." (Jude 24)

Morning Devotion: Feasting in His Presence - Read John 21:1-14

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most significant event in all of human history.  The grandest of all stories ever told has survived the ages and has revolutionized the world. All prior history was driven towards this event, and all history since has been driven by it (our dating system (B.C. "Before Christ," and A.D. "Anno Domini") is based on the advent of Jesus Christ).  The cross of Jesus Christ is the message of the ages.  We have heard it said that "history is His story." There is no other story, we are all participants, willing or not, in God's great narrative of mankind, in which He, as the Author, not only tells us, but shows us His love.

When the Lord met His disciples for the third time (reference John 21:14), He found them right back where they had started, doing their ordinary work.  Jesus had instructed them to meet Him at the Sea of Galilee (the place where He had first called them drop everything and follow Him) to show them how far they had come and where they were headed next (reference Luke 5:1-11).  Jesus called out to them, "Children, have you any food?" (John 21:5).  They had nothing to offer the man waiting on the shore, but this was no ordinary man.  As soon as they verbalized their need, He instructed them in what they needed to do: "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some" (v.6a).  A simple act of obedience was all it took for them to find themselves full within moments of having been empty - it was the difference between trusting in their own labor versus acting on the power of God. One look at the miraculous catch and John knew, "It is the Lord!"  While John spoke, Peter acted - he immediately jumped out of the boat and headed for shore.  When he arrived he found the Lord, always the servant, preparing them a meal.  "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught" (v.10).  Jesus, ever the Teacher, wanted them to see that He would never give them any more than they could handle, but the work they were being sent out to do would be done in His strength and through His power alone.  "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men" (Luke 5:10b).  These great fishermen had learned what they needed to become great "fishers of men."  Their impact and effectiveness in ministry would be completely dependent upon the Lord; and their service would not be out of a sense of duty, but based solely on the power of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not a fable, but a fact.  This message was carefully and courageously carried by witnessed who, not only saw an empty tomb, but who also saw Jesus alive.  Jesus made many personal appearances after His resurrection to attest to this fact; and not just to one person, but to groups of two, seven, ten, eleven, and even five hundred people at one time (1 Corinthians 15:5-8).  The fact that the disciples themselves did not believe that Jesus was alive until He convinced them otherwise gives further evidence to support the resurrection as historical fact not fiction; for who would be willing to die for a message that was nothing more than a lie.  Coming face to face with the risen Lord so greatly impacted and transformed their lives that they laid everything down, including their lives, to carry the message of the cross to the world; and praise God that they did!

Every day the message of the cross radically transforms and revolutionizes people's lives.  No other evidence is needed than the evidence of a changed life that has resulted when a lost sinner has come in contact with the risen and living Christ.  The testimony of the transformation we have all experienced in our own lives is all the evidence we need to convince us that we should be willing to lay down our lives to carry the glorious message of Jesus Christ.  We have not been called to a cause, but to a Person - Jesus Christ; and His story should be our one and only, ever reoccurring theme.  To preach Jesus Christ alone and Him Crucified should be the sole mission of our lives (reference 1 Corinthians 2:2).  God has given each of us a number and a net; and despite our doubts, fears, or failings, God Himself will see to it that none which He has called are lost.  We are simply to be obedient and cast our net in the direction He instructs.  May we not limit God's ability to work through us because we are just too busy doing our own work to give attention to His.  God has given us the master key to the heart of the hearer, just as He did for Peter (reference Matthew 16:18). May we use it to unlock the door and open the way for many lost souls to believe.  May we have a listening heart to recognize the Lord when He is in our midst as John did, and have the passionate zeal to run to Him as Peter did. He is near to us, and showing Himself mighty on our behalf. Let us enter our prayer closet and pray and ask the Lord to forgive and to remove any doubts we may have regarding His call on our lives; ask Him for encouragement where there has been disappointment and discouragement; ask Him for boldness and courage where there has been fear and apprehension;  and ask Him to instruct us how to use everything we have for the advancement of His kingdom and the glory of His name.

Heavenly Father,
"How majestic is Your name in all the earth!"
(Psalm 8:1b)
"I trust in Your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in Your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD,
for He has been good to me."
(Psalm 13:5-6)
"Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.
I say to myself, 'The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for Him.'
The LORD is good to those whose hope is in Him,
to the one who seeks Him;
it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD."
(Lamentations 3:22-26)
Thank You, Father, that You are providing for me, even when
my hands seem to come up empty.  I only want what You have
purposed and prepared for my life.
You have Your very best planned for me.
Help me to be diligent in the work You have given me to do,
but not become so busy and distracted that I miss
seeing Your hand at work in everything I do.
Thank You for the countless meals that I have
had the pleasure of dining with You.
I praise You for sweet conversations we have had
at Your table each day,
and the fullness of joy I have found in Your presence.
My heart is so full of love for You;
help me to not keep it in, but share Your love
with whomever You bring across my path today.
In Jesus' Mighty Name. I pray. Amen.

REVOLUTIONIZE THE WORLD!

"Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty." (Zechariah 4:6)

Afternoon Devotion: Filled with His Power - Read Acts 1:1-11

Jesus spent forty days with His disciples after He was resurrected to assure that His work would continue in the world after He left.  The disciples were used to the Lord's bodily presence; how kind He was to wean them ever so gently, and prepare them for the time when He would no longer be with them in human form - but He would be with them in the Spirit. "...but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now" (Acts 1:5b).  Everything they had grown to rely upon in the flesh would in a moment be transformed.  Every natural, temporary thought and desire would be changed in an instant when the Spirit would rest upon them and open their eyes and hearts to the eternal spiritual kingdom of God.  Jesus met with them to give them instruction for their work in the world and how they would accomplish it:  "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (v. 8).

The Holy Spirit of divine might was given to make the work of God effectual in the lives of His followers.  The disciples were instructed to wait until they received that power before they began the work. The disciples' willingness to wait on God proved beneficial as the promised gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them at Pentecost (reference Acts 2:1-4).  The ministry of the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary for the work of Jesus Christ to continue in the world.  We often attempt to do the work of God in our own strength, and like the disciples casting their nets without Christ's help we come up empty handed.  Charles Spurgeon has said, "We slander God with our very eagerness to work for Him without knowing Him."   If we knew God as we should, we would know that His work is done His way, in His time, and in His power.  The work of God will not be done in any other way. Therefore it is essential that we take the time to understand His will through His Word each day.  God has given us His instruction Book for life and a personal Guide in His Holy Spirit to lead us through this life to accomplish His will.  If we aren't utilizing these essential tools we are wasting energy and time that will yield little of any kingdom value.  May we tap into the power we have been given by meeting with the Lord daily in prayer and allowing Him to feed us from His Word, so we will have all the nourishment and strength we need to carry His glorious message to the rest of the hungering world.

A well-known Chinese proverb states that if you  "Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime."  The Lord wants to teach us to be completely dependent upon Him by becoming disciplined to meet with Him moment-by-moment, and meal-by-meal throughout each and every day; so His body will be strong and healthy and whole (and holy!).  May we make it a priority each day to come to the table when our Father calls, and sit in His presence and feast on the rich portion He has thoughtfully prepared for us.  There is no other appointment on our calendar that is as important as this one is to keep.  When we show up we will find He was already waiting for us, with the food we need already prepared!  May we listen to the voice of our beloved Bridegroom calling us to "Come and have breakfast (or lunch, or dinner, or a midnight snack!)" (John 21:12a).  May we come often and give Him the attention and affection He desires and deserves from His children.

 "And when they had prayed,
the place where they were assembled together was shaken;
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God with boldness."
(Acts 4:31)

RESTORE PRAISE!

"Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever, Amen!" (Revelation 7:12)

Evening Devotion: Focused on His Praise - Read Psalm 5

David was a man after God's own heart who kept his prayer appointments with God.  If we are determined to do God's work in the world we need to take the appropriate measures to be sure we are walking in His strength and power, and according to His will.  This is evidenced by the amount of time we spend in prayer and in the study of the Word of God.   Each new day provides a wondrous opportunity for us to experience a divine encounter with the living, resurrected Lord; therefore we should make every effort to keep our appointments with the Lord and become more intentional about meeting with Him throughout the day.  It is vital that we wait upon the Lord and draw strength from Him for the work He has given us to do and to be the witnesses He has called us to be. Imagine where the church would be today if the disciples had not waited for Pentecost!

We have received a new and living life in Christ Jesus, and we should want nothing more than to live our lives in such a holy and honorable way that the name of the Lord would be glorified in everything we say, think and do.  There is no better way to honor our Lord and to bless the heavenly Father than to do the very thing He desires most of all, which is to spend intimate time with His children! How great are His affections toward us and how dearly He deserves our attention and devotion.  As we come to the end of our day, may we reconfirm our absolute dependence, trust and love for Lord and sing His praises.  "But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them.  Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.  For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield" (v.11-12)

"Give ear to my words, O LORD,
consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help,
my King and my God, for to You I pray.
In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my request before You
and wait in expectation."
(Psalm 5:1-3)
