"Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
and to present you faultless
before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
to God our Savior, who alone is wise,
be glory and majesty, dominion and power,
both now and forever. Amen."
(Jude 24-25, NKJV)
MORNING DEVOTION- "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee..." (Psalm 63:1)
Scripture Reading: Luke 21:34-38
During His final week leading up to the cross Jesus spent His days in the temple ministering to the people, and His nights on the Mount of Olives. While our Savior would not be delivered from the suffering that lie ahead, He would provide for us the key to successfully overcoming the trials we would face in this world, and ultimately deliver us from the judgment to come: "Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man" (v.36). It is our duty, as believers, to be watchful, guarding against sin in our lives, and keeping up our communion with God in prayer.
There were many in Jesus' day who missed seeing their promised Messiah because their hearts were hardened and their eyes were blinded (reference John 12:40). Time and time again Jesus was revealed plainly to the people as the Son of God, but they rejected Him. "...I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that You sent Me" (John 11:42). The gospel was written so that we would believe that Jesus is the Christ and put our faith in Him (reference John 20:31). As His children, we are to look at the world through spiritual lenses, recognizing that the hour of His return is close at hand, and realizing we have little time to share His Light with the lost in this dark world (reference John 12:35-36).
The Lord desires that we draw close to Him, and He provides the pathway into deepening intimacy through the indwelling presence of His Holy Spirit, the study and meditation of His Word and unceasing communion with Him in prayer. Every day we have the blessed privilege of encountering the living God in the secret place of prayer; and then we have the added blessing of sharing His presence and love with others when we pray for them and minister to them as Jesus did. While we wait expectantly for His return we can experience tremendous joy knowing that He is always with us and will never leave or forsake us (reference Hebrews 13:5b). "...we know that the One who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in His presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God" (2 Corinthians 4:14-15).
Heavenly Father,
Help me to fix my gaze upon You
as Jesus did and willingly offer
up my life to suffer all for the love of Christ
who lives in me.
Help me to embrace all that You bring
across my path with joy, but do not
let me take a single step without the
answer to this one request, that Your
servant Moses once prayed himself:
"If Your presence does not go with us,
do not sent us up from here" (Exodus 33:15).
I am standing on Your promise today,
"My presence will go with you,
and I will give you rest." (v.14).
Be glorified as I go about my Father's
business today.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
This morning as we begin our day in prayer let us take a moment to rejoice in the knowledge that we have received the object of our heart's desire. We are Christ's and He is ours. In His presence we are secure and satisfied. He is with us, and He is within us. Every moment of the day is a moment we can draw near to the Father, and draw from Him all that we need. Let us begin today in His love, as we delight in His presence, and pray only for more moments like these where we can practice what we will be doing for all eternity - dwelling in His presence and praising His glorious name!
AFTERNOON DEVOTION -"Evening, and morning, and noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice" (Psalm 55:17, KJV).
Scripture Reading: John 12:26-30
Jesus' heart was troubled as the hour of His agony and death was approaching. "...what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour" (v.27). With the hands of the kingdom clock moving closer to the appointed hour, Jesus prayed all the more fervently; not wanting to be delivered out of His trial, but rather through it; that through His sufferings and sacrifice the Father would be glorified. "Father, glorify Your name!" (v.28a). He gave us this example in prayer to show us that no matter how difficult or impossible our circumstances may be we can pray for strength to submit to the will of the Father, and patience to bear up under the suffering. In the darkest hours we need not despair for our lives, but trust in divine wisdom which allows us to walk through these trials "for such a time as this" that God's will be done and His name be lifted high and glorified. Jesus' prayer was not centered on His sufferings, instead He was concerned solely with the glory of the Father, therefore the Father answered Him: "Then a voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and will glorify it again" (v.28b).
The Father spoke from heaven just as He had done for His servant Moses, so that the people would believe in the one He had sent to deliver them. "The LORD said to Moses, 'I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear Me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you" (Exodus 19:9). As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been commissioned to be His ambassadors of Light in the world, and He has given us this promise: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). We do not need to be fearful of the trials we will face, because God's presence is with us wherever we are and wherever we go. There is an appointed hour for trials and also for triumphs. We need to trust in the Lord's perfect timing for all that He allows to come into and through our lives. When we learn to dwell in His love we will find that His love sweetens and softens any portion of pain that He has purposed in our lives for our good and His glory. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Psalm 30:5b).
Heavenly Father,
You have promised to "keep in perfect peace
him whose mind is steadfast,
because he trusts in You" (Isaiah 26:3).
Help me to trust in Your perfect timing
and to wait in your perfect peace until
You have performed Your perfect will
in and through my life for the glory of Your holy name.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
In the hour of prayer is where we will find our greatest peace, because it is in the secret place that we learn to abide in the presence of the Lord. As we learn to develop the habit of spending time in His presence, we will also learn that He is there to assist us in all the trials and difficulties of life. The more time we spend in the presence of the Lord, the less distracted we will become when the storms of life come upon us. Jesus knew the hour of agony was upon Him, it is the reason He was sent into the world. As believers, we can expect to suffer as Christ suffered (1 Peter 4:12-16). Our circumstances may not change, in fact, they may actually intensify, but our response to those circumstances can surely be transformed by the great sense of peace and joy that overtakes our heart when we spend uninterrupted time in daily communion with our heavenly Father. May our ministry to the world begin only after we have served the heart of the Father by washing His feet with our tears each day. Let us pray for believers everywhere to be able to rejoice in their sufferings and offer praise to God in the midst of their fiery trials because the presence of the Lord is with us and we bear His name.
EVENING MEDITATION -"...and on His law he meditates day and night" (Psalm 1:2)
Scripture Reading: Psalm 16
Throughout the Old Testament God's chosen leaders found safety and security (and ultimately victory) as they practiced the presence of the Lord in prayer (reference 2 Chronicles 20:9, 17). Prayer is the pathway into the Father's presence, and the golden key to unlocking the door to His blessings. As we bask in the presence of the Lord this evening, and meditate on David's prayer in Psalm 16, let us offer up praise to our gracious and loving heavenly Father for the pleasure of His constant, abiding presence, and thank Him for His abundant provision and protection in our lives. May our hearts be fully yielded to the love of the Father so we can be filled with more or His love, and our prayers aligned with the prayers of our great Intercessor, Jesus, whose petitions are of the highest order - for the Father's glory!
Heavenly Father,
"I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel;
my heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
I have set the LORD always before me;
because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
my flesh also will rest in hope.
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol,
nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
You will show me the path of life;
in Your presence is fullness of joy;
at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (vv.7-11)
