"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds,
and to him who knocks it will be opened."
(Matthew 7:7-8, NKJV)
(Matthew 7:7-8)
MORNING DEVOTION- "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee..." (Psalm 63:1)
Scripture Reading: Luke 11:5-10
We've just begun to unravel the secrets of our native tongue, and already we've discovered that the language of prayer is the language of love. This was articulated beautifully by our heavenly Father in the great sacrifice of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. With one holy and righteous act He spoke volumes; the contents of which are unable to be contained in all the libraries of the world. But with one cherished volume, protected and preserved, and handed down from generation to generation, He continues to speak to us in the only language He knows how to speak - love! The Lord desires that we, His children, would simply surrender and receive His blessings - from the One who holds nothing back from those He loves.
Jesus had just finished teaching His disciples the pattern for how to pray, and now He instructs them to persist in prayer for others by telling them a parable of a man willing to get up even at midnight to meet the needs of his friend. This man sacrificed his own comfort and sleep to provide for another. Jesus provided this parable as a perfect illustration of true intercession, and to show that those who persist in prayer will not walk away empty-handed. The promise of persistent praying is in the answer that is guaranteed to come. Jesus calls us to continue in prayer until we receive the answer, because prayer is meant to have an answer. Sometimes the answer is delayed, but we are called to persist just the same; until we are prepared to receive what He has purposed.
Many of us make new year's resolutions to start a new diet or begin a new exercise regime so we can shed excess weight and begin the year physically fit. We've subscribed to the advertisements that guarantee inches lost and strength gained, if we will simply follow the prescribed program. Jesus provides for us the ultimate guarantee of victory and success, if we are willing to surrender to His instruction and become trained in prayer. By following our Master's daily exercise regime, willing to rise early, and diligent in seeking Him throughout the day, we will become more spiritually fit and strengthened, sculpted into useful vessels through which He can channel His grace into the world. Prayer is not only meant to obtain the strength and blessing we need for our own lives, but the greater lesson the Lord desires us to learn in prayer is how to intercede for others.
Heavenly Father,
You hold nothing back from me,
but too often I withdraw and hold myself from You.
I want to be fully surrendered and willing
to do the necessary work to become
the useful vessel You created me to be.
Empty me of me and fill me with more of You,
so You can pour through my life Your love and blessings to those in need.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
As we meditate on today's Scripture reading we might ask ourselves how often we have truly persevered in prayer; staying up in the wee hours of the night, or rising before dawn, praying for days, weeks, even years to intercede on behalf of our loved ones, a neighbor, a co-worker, our church, our pastor, our military, our nations leaders, a persecuted missionary in another country, the Lord's people Israel, the lost, the widowed, the orphaned, the unborn, and countless others who desperately need the prayers of the sons and daughters of God to pour out His mercies and grace into their lives. Charles Stanley has said, "There is nothing more powerful than someone who knows how to talk to God on your behalf." This morning as you make it your priority to labor for those the Lord has expressly burdened your heart for today, praise Him for entrusting these precious people and challenging situations to your care - keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking on their behalf, knowing that the greatest help you can offer them is to bring them before the Lord in prayer. Trust the Lord, that when His answer is delayed, He is simply purifying, strengthening, preparing, and making us more fit to receive the wondrous blessing He has promised to give.
AFTERNOON DEVOTION -"Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed..." (Daniel 6:10)
Scripture Reading: 1 John 5:14-15
The Lord's great desire for His children is for us to experience deeper fellowship with Him so that we will learn to trust Him more; allowing Him to pour His love into our lives so that we can be used to pour out His grace into the lives of others. It is in conversation of prayer - our asking and His giving - that He expresses His love for us; a love He has no desire to withhold, but we often miss out on because we have become lazy and unskilled in this most holy discipline of prayer.
This calls for confidence and diligence on behalf of His children; believing that our prayers are actually heard and will receive an answer. The power of prayer rests in the assurance that we will be heard and answered. Our Heavenly Father is not a rude operator on the other end of the line who is willing to accept our call but hanging up the phone before giving an answer. On the contrary, He waits patiently for us, watching over us while we send out our SOS in a sea of emails, text messages, and phone calls, because we're just too accustomed to getting instant answers to our many questions and problems. Sometimes we give up far too quickly in our praying, often as soon as we submitted our request, all because we are too impatient to wait for what God has promised.
God explicitly said, "Ask and you will receive." He wants His children to come confidently and boldly before His throne (Hebrews 4:16), and receive the answer He has waiting for us. It is His will to answer our request. He will always answer. Every so often, however, when our request is not according to His Word, He may ask us to withdraw our request; calling us to be more diligent in the study of His Word. It is here, in the teaching of His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, that we gain confidence in knowing the will of God and praying according to His will. The more we are trained in this discipline to know His will, the greater boldness we will have to come before His throne and make our requests. He is a gracious, loving, and benevolent heavenly Father who is waiting for us to ask so He can answer. It is His loving nature to bless His children. He has made the answers we are looking for entirely dependent upon our prayers. We are to be conduits of His blessings to all those in need, but we are stopping up the pipes. He won't give until we are willing to ask. The responsibility of asking rests with us, the response of blessing will come from Him - in His perfect timing!
Heavenly Father, I thank You that
You have the answer I need,
and all that I have to do is ask to receive.
Help me to dwell in living dependence
upon You and Your Word so that I will
know Your will and have confidence when I pray.
In Jesus' Name. Amen
Sometimes we question why things aren't going the way we expect they should, or why we don't have the answers we are seeking, when, in reality, we should consider if we have truly asked of our Heavenly Father as we should. Take time today to write out your requests, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you through His Word to know how to pray and ask the things of God that are in accordance with His will for the people and circumstances He has entrusted you to pray for. Persist in prayer, and rest in the confidence that He hears your prayers and will answer them in His perfect timing. Recognize that He may take a little more time than you expected in order to teach you a greater lesson of His will, and lead you to deepening intimacy with Him, so you will be more spiritually fit to receive the answer when it comes from His benevolent hand. Rejoice that He is guiding you every step of the way, and let the joy of the Lord be your strength as He grows you up in Him day by day as you pray!
EVENING MEDITATION -"...and on His law he meditates day and night" (Ps. 1:2)
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 29:11-13
Take time this evening to meditate on this familiar Scripture, trusting that when you call upon your heavenly Father He will listen and answer you. This is what Andrew Murray calls: "The eternal law of the kingdom - ask and you will receive, everyone who asks, receives." The Lord has great plans for each of His children, desiring to bless us with all we need to live out the glorious future He has planned for us; all of which is at our disposal if we will simply ask. May our hearts be awakened to claim in prayer every precious promise and blessing the Father has in store for us and for the people He has placed in our lives.
Heavenly Father,
You know what You have planned
for my life before I ever breathed
my first breath.
I pray that You will
teach me these 40 days
to breathe in the pure air from heaven
so that I can breathe out the true language of prayer -
the Father's love.
Help me to live and walk in that atmosphere of love
all the days of my life so that Your love
can flow through my life and refresh the hearts of man.
In Jesus' Name. Amen.
As you close this day in prayer, reflect back on your day and look for all the simple and profoundly wonderful ways the Lord revealed Himself to you today. Record your prayers, petitions, praises and additional Scriptures the Lord has lead you to in your prayer journal.
