Day Thirty-Eight Devotions:
MORNING MEDITATION
AFTERNOON DEVOTION
EVENING PRAYER
MORNING MEDITATION

Morning Meditation:"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. I have given them the glory that You gave Me, that they may be one as we are one. I in them and You in Me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that You sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me."- John 17:20-23

It has been well said that, "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work, it is the greater work" (Oswald Chambers); and it has also been said that the Lord does not call us to some great work, He calls us to Himself. His purpose from the beginning has been to make us one with Him; therefore, His prayers were directed with that one goal in mind. He began first by praying for Himself; His prayer was short, but He wanted us to know how important it is that we draw fresh supplies from God before we engage in spiritual warfare. We are in the midst of a holy war that is bent on destroying our union with God, and we must be adequately protected and prepared to stand our ground. That is why our Lord prayed that we would be protected and sanctified; making sure we are dressed in the appropriate battle armor and consecrated to His service, so we can go into battle "more than conquerors," and achieve the victory. "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:11-12) Before we even take one step on the battlefield each day, it is vital that we follow our Commander's example and take the time to pray. Nothing disarms the enemy more than to see the soldiers of Christ get on their knees in prayer - from this position we draw our strength, while it causes him to fear. "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints" (v.18).

The final prayers our Bridegroom prayed, knowing He was leaving us in the world to continue His work, was for His people to be unified and to share His glory with us. He desires that His Body, His Church, would experience the spiritual unity that is like the oneness He has with the Father. "that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You" (John 17:21a). The unity of the Father and the Son is the standard we are to follow, and Jesus has given us the resources we need to make this unity possible. "I have given them the glory that You gave Me, that they may be one as we are one..." (v. 22). Our unity is a vital witness to a watching world; who observe the way we love each other and live in harmony to determine the reality of the love of God, and if it's something they truly want to believe. "...to let the world know that You sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me" (v.23b). The world sits in darkness, ignorant of God and spiritually blind, and with hardness of heart. We have the knowledge and the light that they desperately need (remember there was a time we needed this message too!), but they will only accept it from us if our witness is authentic, faithful, loving and true. The Lord has prayed for all those who will come to believe, but they will never get the message if we don't provide the loving, unified witness the Lord wants them to see. We are united as a Body, under one common Head, which is Christ, belonging to the same Father, and influenced by the same power, the Holy Spirit. We share the same faith, the same work, the same truth, and the same heart; and we have been given the same mission and message - we just need to come together as one voice. Holy Spirit, thank You for Your Holy Word; feed and nourish us daily with Your truth so we will speak only those things that will honor and glorify our risen Lord. Help us not to waste precious breath on words that tear others down, but rather teach us to speak the truth in love so we can build others up and give a clear trumpet sound that will lead many to salvation. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"Father, I want those you have given Me to be with Me where I am,

and to see My glory, the glory You have given me because

You loved Me before the creation of the world.

Righteous Father, though the world does not know You,

I know You and they know You have sent Me.

I have made You known to them,

and will continue to make You known

in order that the love You have for Me may be in them

and that I myself may be in them."

(John 17:24-26)

AFTERNOON DEVOTION

Afternoon Devotion: "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." - Colossians 3:12-15

We have been united to Christ; He has shared His glory with us, and He wants us to continue to grow in Him so that His glory will be revealed to the world. "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). God gave us the Holy Spirit to glorify Christ in us; and He wants to use our bodies as a holy vessel through which He can be further magnified in this world. Our lives are not our own - we have been purchased by God for His particular use; therefore we should honor the Lord with our bodies; allowing the Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness so we can have victory over the flesh, and live holy lives free from sin that would otherwise weaken our testimony and the witness of the church. "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God" (1 John 3:9). We have been united together as one body so we can encourage one another and build up the body of Christ for the praise of His name. "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth" (v.18).

Whatever we do, in word or deed, should be done with a spirit of thanksgiving. Our lives should be lived in gratitude for all that we have been given; after all, we've been given a kingdom. Ours is a holy union - we are being perfected in Christ; and everyday should begin with grateful praise to our beloved Bridegroom who has secured fellowship with holy God for us. "You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give You thanks forever" (Psalm 30:11-12). We must take care to not take for granted all that we have been given, but rather be good and faithful stewards of our spiritual privileges and blessings, allowing the Holy Spirit to continue the work of transforming us into His glorious image. And while we rejoice, with gratitude in our hearts, for all that God has done in our lives, we must continue to pray for the continued mission of Christ and the salvation and deliverance of those who will be brought into the body of Christ. Holy Spirit, thank you for leading us into a more perfect union with Christ; continue to transform us into His likeness with ever-increasing glory so that the holy life you are creating in us will permeate across this land and draw many into the glorious presence of the Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,

let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably

with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire."

(Hebrews 12:28-29)

EVENING PRAYER

Evening Prayer of Thanksgiving:  "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." - Colossians 3:16-17

"Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name;

make known among the nations what He has done.

Sing to Him, sing praise to Him;

tell of all His wonderful acts.

Glory in His holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

Sing to the LORD, all the earth;

proclaim His salvation day after day.

Declare His glory among the nations,

His marvelous deeds among all peoples.

For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;

He is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the nations are idols,

but the LORD made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before Him;

strength and joy are His dwelling place.

Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength,

ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name.

Give thanks to the LORD, for His is good;

His love endures forever.

Cry out, "Save us, O God our Savior;

gather us and deliver us from the nations,

that we may give thanks to Your holy name,

that we may glory in Your praise."

Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting.

Then all the people said "Amen" and "Praise the LORD."

(1 Chronicles 16:8-10; 23-29, 34-36)
