AFTERNOON DEVOTION
Afternoon Devotion: "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." - Colossians 3:12-15
To be baptized by the Spirit means we belong to Christ's body, and once we belong to Him we are commanded to yield our bodies to the control of the Holy Spirit. "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Jesus, Himself, said that He would not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the great kingdom feast (Luke 22:18); it should be our joy to submit to His rule in our lives while we wait for His return. Our body is not our own, it has been bought with a price, and we are to honor Him with our body by being emptied of self and being continually filled with His Spirit. "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Every member of the Body must be willing to do their part, so we can be filled with necessary spiritual power and become a unified, whole, healthy and strong Body that functions properly.
God has given us His provision of the Holy Spirit so we can live and work together in unity and grow to maturity. As a Body we are to make the best of one another; "bearing with one another in love" (Ephesians 4:2). We are called to uphold one another lovingly; and the stronger we are spiritually, we are more apt to be able to "bear with the failings of the weak" (Romans 15:1). The Scriptures were written to encourage us to hold fast and to patiently endure. We need to return to the ministry of the Word of God and prayer so we can edify the Body and experience fruitfulness and growth. When the organs of the body function properly the body as a whole will be healthy and strong. The same holds true for the spiritual body, so it is vital that we receive our necessary spiritual nourishment so we can support those members who may not be as strong. "And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone" (1 Thessalonians 5:14). Holy Spirit, help us to support and edify one another so we will become a unified and healthy body that will glorify God. Amen.
"We who are strong out to bear with the failings of the weak
and not to please ourselves.
Each of us should please his neighbor for his good to build him up.
For even Christ did not please Himself but, as it is written:
'The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me."
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,
so that through endurance and the encouragement
of the Scriptures we might have hope.
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement
give you a spirit of unity among yourselves
as you follow Christ Jesus,
so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."
(Romans 15:1-6)
