Day Thirty-Four Devotions:
MORNING MEDITATION
AFTERNOON DEVOTION
EVENING PRAYER
MORNING MEDITATION

Morning Meditation: "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called - one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over and through all and in all."- Ephesians 4:1-6

John came preaching a baptism of repentance. He was God's messenger, sent to "prepare the way for the Lord" (Isaiah 40:3). He called to the people to come out of the dryness of their spiritual desert wasteland and enter the land of promise in Christ Jesus, where they would find streams of living water flowing in abundance. "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit" (Mark 1:8). There is one baptism for the one body of Christ - the baptism of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13). Because of the gift of the Spirit, which is received at conversion, we are all members of the body of Christ. All believers have experienced this once-for-all baptism. And the evidence of salvation is the witness of the Spirit within. "The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children" (Romans 8:16).

God has given all His people His Holy Spirit to indwell them. It is only through the indwelling and enabling power of the Holy Spirit that we can walk in harmony and live in unity. When Jesus stood up on the last and greatest day of the Feast, the moment of "the pouring out of the water," He declared in a loud voice, that whoever would come to Him would be forever connected to the eternal source of life; the perpetual fountain of living and running water that would never run dry and forever satisfy their thirst. " 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within.' By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive" (John 7:37-39a). The evidence of this vital connection would be witnessed in a holy and fruitful life; a life that is truly transformed within will produce good fruit. It is the Holy Spirit, who is deposited within each believer at the moment of conversion, which enables His people to be more like Christ. "Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them" (Matthew 7:20). We have all been given "the one Spirit to drink," to refresh and replenish our souls so we can produce the fruit of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13b; Galatians 5:22-23). Holy Spirit we thank You for Your presence which has joined us into a more perfect union with Jesus Christ, to make us one with Him and to live a holy life as one Body in Christ. Amen.

"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts;

and though all its parts are many, they form one body.

So it is with Christ.

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body -

whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free -

and we were all given one Spirit to drink."

(1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

AFTERNOON DEVOTION

Afternoon Devotion: "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." - Colossians 3:12-15

To be baptized by the Spirit means we belong to Christ's body, and once we belong to Him we are commanded to yield our bodies to the control of the Holy Spirit. "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Jesus, Himself, said that He would not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the great kingdom feast (Luke 22:18); it should be our joy to submit to His rule in our lives while we wait for His return. Our body is not our own, it has been bought with a price, and we are to honor Him with our body by being emptied of self and being continually filled with His Spirit. "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). Every member of the Body must be willing to do their part, so we can be filled with necessary spiritual power and become a unified, whole, healthy and strong Body that functions properly.

God has given us His provision of the Holy Spirit so we can live and work together in unity and grow to maturity. As a Body we are to make the best of one another; "bearing with one another in love" (Ephesians 4:2). We are called to uphold one another lovingly; and the stronger we are spiritually, we are more apt to be able to "bear with the failings of the weak" (Romans 15:1). The Scriptures were written to encourage us to hold fast and to patiently endure. We need to return to the ministry of the Word of God and prayer so we can edify the Body and experience fruitfulness and growth. When the organs of the body function properly the body as a whole will be healthy and strong. The same holds true for the spiritual body, so it is vital that we receive our necessary spiritual nourishment so we can support those members who may not be as strong. "And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone" (1 Thessalonians 5:14). Holy Spirit, help us to support and edify one another so we will become a unified and healthy body that will glorify God. Amen.

"We who are strong out to bear with the failings of the weak

and not to please ourselves.

Each of us should please his neighbor for his good to build him up.

For even Christ did not please Himself but, as it is written:

'The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me."

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us,

so that through endurance and the encouragement

of the Scriptures we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement

give you a spirit of unity among yourselves

as you follow Christ Jesus,

so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify

the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."

(Romans 15:1-6)

EVENING PRAYER

Evening Prayer of Thanksgiving:  "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." - Colossians 3:16-17

Heavenly Father,

We praise You for the internal renovation

You have given us through the baptism of Your Holy Spirit

which unites us into One Body so that we can live in harmony

and bring glory to Your name.

Help us Holy Spirit to

"live in harmony with one another, be[ing] sympathetic, and

love as brothers, be[ing] compassionate and humble.

...not repay[ing] evil with evil or insult with insult,

but with blessing, because to this [we] were called

so that [we] may inherit a blessing."

Expand the recesses of our hearts and lives

so there can room to be filled with more of Your Spirit.

We surrender full control of our mind, emotions and will,

and ask that You would saturate our lives with Your

holy influences so that we can overflow with Your living water

from within and become a drink offering You can pour

out to quench the thirst of this dry and weary land.

With grateful hearts we ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

(1 Peter 3:8-9)
