AFTERNOON DEVOTION
Afternoon Devotion: "And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way." - Ephesians 1:22-23
God, the Father, gave His Son supremacy over creation and He placed all things under His feet. A suitable helper was chosen for His Son, from His own body, and He took her, the Church for His own and became Head over her; and tenderly and compassionately He cares for her and feeds her as His own. "After all, no one ever hated his own body, but He feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church" (Ephesians 5:29). His desire is for His Body, the Church, to be filled with all His fullness (John 10:10). "From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another" (John 1:16).
Christ reigns over the Church as He reigns over the universe. He is a faithful Shepherd who is ever-present, ever-watchful, and always faithful. The One who was present at Creation, and through whom all things were made, is the trustworthy One who will carry the work of redemption, by repeating His work of creation in the hearts and lives of man. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). God has purposed to bring all things under one head, which is Christ (Ephesians 1:9-10). Let us praise Him for His wisdom in providing a Sovereign Head who has faithfully been leading us to that ultimate place of restoration and rest - where all will be fulfilled in the future kingdom, and where we will regain the rule that was entrusted to man at creation, but was lost because of sin (Genesis 1:26-28).
"Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before Him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God.
It is He who made us, and we are His;
we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving
and His courts with praise;
Give thanks to Him and praise His name.
For the LORD is good and His love endures forever;
His faithfulness continues through all generations."
(Psalm 100)
