Happy New Year!

Time to get healthy! We all make our New Year's resolutions, but really without your health you have nothing. Literally everything you do, every passion you have and every expression of your purpose is affected by whether or not you feel good.

If you have poor health habits and think you are "getting away with it", you are probably not. By the time we manifest a symptom, 75% of the disease is already present. Incorporating a healthy diet, exercise, supplements, and stress management are great ways to protect your health so that you can avoid expensive health events.

Our Flower Essence Program has been rescheduled for January 21st as many of you have expressed an interest but had trouble making the date we had chosen. Please see below for details and how to sign up.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday with many blessings.

One Daily Natural News You Can Use: Multivitamin Use, the Other Side of the Story

You've seen the headlines: "Are Multivitamins a Waste of Money?, "Vitamins Should be Avoided", etc. All of these headlines were generated from an editorial in the Annals of Internal Medicine that was based on a meta analysis of past research and 2 new studies showing no improvement in heart disease and cognitive function in older subjects.

The problem with meta analyses is that one can "hand pick" studies to give a desired result, which unfortunately frequently happens. The multivitamin used in the studies was Centrum Silver. As we have said many times, drug store multivitamins have the least well-absorbed forms of the vitamins (ex. calcium carbonate, ferrous fumarate, dl-alpha tocopherol), have very low potency, and contain dyes, preservatives and fillers that negate the minimal nutrient benefit present in the vitamins. So it is not surprising that a study using these vitamins would show limited benefit.

Despite this, the reporting on the study ignored a significant 8% reduction in non-prostate cancers in men over 50, an 18% reduction in non-prostate cancers in men over 70, and an 11% reduction in cardiovascular events and deaths. Where was the reporting on these benefits in the media?

The study also stated that subjects had normal nutrition and no vitamin deficiencies. I would suspect that this is hard to find, particularly in those with serious health issues. A multivitamin is meant to fill in the gaps in a diet that is not perfect. To make a conclusion that multivitamins are a waste of money because they did not impact already-existing heart disease without accounting for other lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and stress management is just silly. No one with existing disease should expect for multivitamins alone to cure them, but rather should use them as a SUPPLEMENT to other lifestyle changes.

According to the latest Gallup/Healthways poll, healthy eating is at its lowest level since 2008. That combined with the fact that so many of us take prescription drugs give a strong argument for the need for a multivitamin. Diuretics, proton-pump inhibitors (for acid reflux), Metformin, and others cause depletion of important nutrients. The use of sea salt that is not iodized can create an iodine deficiency.

Adding a good quality multivitamin to your daily regimen along with good health habits are cheap health insurance. There are many different types of multivitamins and some can address certain issues or deficiencies. They are not meant to cure disease, but rather to assist you in achieving good health.

Survey after survey finds that 90% of doctors take supplements, even if they do not recommend them to their patients. One researcher in the study who claimed that "taking supplements is throwing money down the drain" admitted that he takes them himself because he has a family history of cancer. Enough said?
