Happy Valentine's Day!

In celebration of heart month we have our Nordic Naturals fish oils on sale--a great way to support heart health relative to inflammation, unhealthy lipid levels, and high blood pressure. And since our crazy weather seems to have kept many of you under the weather, we are continuing some of our cold and flu specials from last month.

Our second weight loss class is underway and our participants are doing very well. We started with an initial detox that, much to their surprise, went very well and was a great kick-off for weight loss. Look for a group detox class coming up in March.

This Valentine's Day extend a hand to someone that doesn't have anyone special in their lives and you will be richer of heart for it!

heart_chilies Natural News You Can Use: Natural Ways to Manage Blood Pressure

Blood pressure drugs are some of the most prescribed drugs there are, especially in the age group over 60. When your blood pressure starts to trend up, and before you go on medication, here are some suggestions:
  • Reduce the amount of refined sugar and grains in your diet. The high blood sugar caused by these foods can cause insulin resistance, which is directly linked to high blood pressure. Have your glucose levels checked. At a level of 100 or more you are considered pre-diabetic. This is deceiving, however because most natural doctors recommend that your levels be around 80 to be in the optimal range. Above this level dietary modifications need to be made.
  • Eat foods high in potassium. Sodium and potassium work together to maintain the appropriate water balance in the body, which affects blood pressure. If you eat a lot of packaged foods this balance may be upset. Add avocado, coconut water, potatoes, root vegetables, and sour cherry juice to your diet to improve this balance. Many fruits are also high in potassium.
  • Take magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax the blood vessels, helps us manage stress, and is important to blood sugar management.
  • Supplement with hawthorn berry or leaf. Hawthorn is a great heart tonic and has been studied for its blood pressure-lowering effects.
