Allyson Felix won her semifinal in the 400m late last night here in Rio with a time of 49.67 seconds; which was the fastest of the semis, and the second fasted time in the World this year behind her Olympic Trials Final in June.
Allyson has come back from a serious ankle injury suffered in May, just 100 days before the start of these Games. That injury threatened her entire Olympic season. ( see video below)
Allyson is the defending 200m Olympic Champion, and narrowly missed qualifying for the 200m race in Rio. Her focus is on 400m Gold tonight. While she is the defending 400m World Champion, and has won two Olympic 4x400m relay gold medals in Beijing and London, she is running the individual 400m for the first time at the Games.
Tonight in the finals she looks to add to her legacy of 6 Olympic medals with the 400m win before moving on to the 4x400m and 4x100m relays later in the week.

Coach Bobby Kersee likes what he sees: a strong ankle and good "front side mechanics! " Allyson cruised to victory with the fastest time in both semifinals. On to the finals tonight!

Safe Inside Rio?
By Robert Forster, PT CEO

Until reports of the US Judo Bronze medalist getting mugged on Copacabana Beach after his event last week, and news that US swimmers were held up at gun point Saturday
night, a large military security presence here had us feeling safe. I think we were being optimistic.

Apparently the Army personnel at Copacabana Beach believe a terrorist attack would be coming from the sea.
With a heighten awareness after these two publicized events, one begins to notice the serious lapses in the ability of this nation to protect any of us against the widespread and random violence that plagues this city everyday.
While heavily armed military style security details are seen frequently, much of the time the crowds are too spread out to offer blanket protection.

At the relatively puny 40,000 seat Track and Field venue (The Beijing Bird Nest Held 100k spectators), which was sold out for Usain Bolt's 100m final, the security was spotty.
The stadium is built right in the middle of one of the city's most crime plagued areas and even with heavily armed military personnel all around, it felt dangerous.
There was vigorous X-Ray screening of our bags upon entry; however, security personnel wanted to disallow entry for the medication

used with ultrasound treatments, and athletic tape scissors, which have a blunted safety tip and are useless as a weapon.
Once inside the venue there was not much security presence. One medical staff simply slipped past the security staff guarding the warm up track where athletes ready themselves for their event before they go into the stadium. After past Olympic terror incidents, one would assume the athletes would be regarded as a target and be better protected.
In the spectator stands there was very little crowd control, and the aisles were clogged with partying fans. Any emergency would have caused complete chaos. Making matters worse, the steps in the stadium were built at random heights with one step being 6 inches and the next 8-12 inches. This caused many trips and slips even when navigating them without any urgency.
So we remain aware and alert and ever hopeful that the Olympics bring out the best of humanity and not the worst!

"I want to thank all of my family, friends and fans for the overwhelming support and concern I have received today," Lochte said in a statement posted to Instagram and Twitter.
"While it is true that my teammates and I were the victims of a robbery early Sunday morning, what is most important is that we are safe and unharmed. I am honored to have represented the U.S. here at the Rio Olympics and to win Gold for my country alongside my teammates. I look forward to getting home so that I can begin to map out the plans for my future with an eye on representing #TeamUSA at the #2020 Tokyo Olympics." Lochte and three other U.S. swimmers (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen) were involved in the incident, which occurred early Sunday morning when their taxi was stopped by people posing as armed police officers.

I'm Ready to Retire, Says Michael Phelps
RIO DE JANEIRO: No means no. No amount of cajoling, arm-twisting and pleading by his teammates and swimming fans around the world will make Michael Phelps change his mind about retiring after the Rio Olympics.
The great American
"I've been able to do everything I've ever put my mind to in this sport. And 24 years in the sport. I'm happy with how things finished."
"No," he said as the question was still leaving the journalist's lips, a succession of further 'no's following in close succession.
"Done. (South African co-silver medallist) Chad (Le Clos) asked me in the award area and the Dwyers were chanting 'four more years'.
"They did the same thing in London. The 800 free relay guys said four more years ... No. I am NOT going four more years.
"And I'm standing by that," he insisted.
