The best in Southern literature, from the people who would know...Southern Independent (and independently minded!) Booksellers! Formerly the "SIBA Book Award," the newly reborn Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize features an expanded list of categories, inspired by the tastes and inclinations of Southern readers. Nominated by booksellers and their customers, vetted by bookstores and selected by a jury of Southern booksellers, these are the Southern books that Southern bookstores were most passionate about, and inspired the most "you've got to read this" moments and "hand sell" moments in stores across the South. The nine winners, including the Poppy's Pants Young Adult Prize and the Poppy's Pants Youngster's Prize, were chosen from a field of nearly forty finalists. Together, they represent the best of Southern literature, from the people who would know -- Southern indie booksellers.

The Order of the Eternal Sun The Order of the Eternal Sun by Jessica Leake

But awkward defense lessons are the least of her problems. Her arcana, a magical talent that allows her to mentally enter any scene that she draws, grows stronger by the day, and with each stroke of her pen, she risks attracting the attention of the Order of the Eternal Sun, the sinister brotherhood that steals the power of Sylvani blood for their own dark ends. When a bold new suitor arrives from India, Lucy can't help but be intrigued. But as Lucy's own suspicions grow, and the threat of the Order looms larger, Lucy will have to learn to harness her unpredictable power or risk falling under the Order's shadow forever.

All Waiting Is Long All Waiting Is Long by Barbara J. Taylor
In 1930, 25-year-old Violet travels with her 16-year-old sister Lily from Scranton, Pennsylvania, to the Good Shepherd Infant Asylum in Philadelphia, so Lily can deliver her illegitimate child in secret, jeopardizing Violet's engagement to her longtime sweetheart. Meanwhile, Mother Mary Joseph, who runs the Good Shepherd, has no idea the asylum's physician is involved in eugenics and experimenting on the girls with various sterilization techniques. Five years later, Lily and Violet are back home in Scranton, one married, one about to be, each finding her own way in a place where a woman's worth is tied to her virtue. Against the backdrop of the sweeping eugenics movement and rogue coal mine strikes, the Morgan sisters must choose between duty and desire. Truly Madly Guilty Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families. Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there's anything they can count on, it's each other. Clementine and Erika are each other's oldest friends. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don't hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid's larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite. Two months later, it won't stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can't stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn't gone?

Purity Purity by Jonathan Franzen
Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother -- her only family -- is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life. It takes a seemingly chance encounter with two visitors from Germany to send Pip -- and the reader -- on a journey of discovery that ranges from Stasi-era East Berlin to a rainforest in Bolivia; and from the ancient war between the sexes to the present-day bewilderments of the Internet. Purity is a grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder -- the most daring and penetrating book yet by one of the major writers of our time.

Baby Doll Baby Doll by Hollie Overton
The most tense psychological thriller I've read in a while. Rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath are only two of the things you will feel while reading about what happens to Lily after she escapes with her 6-year-old daughter from the torture chamber she has been held in for 8 years. Lily disappeared without a trace when she was 16. The family dynamics are heartbreaking as those left behind (including Abby, Lily's identical twin) attempted to build a new life without Lily. When Lily returns, not only do they have to adjust to another new life, but Lily has to figure out how to let go of her old life so she can start something real for herself and her daughter.
