January 2016

Happy 2016! Please encourage your kids to each make some sort of reading resolution this year. Then bring them by the store and let us help them find the perfect books to fulfill it.

Just don't drop by on Tuesday, January 26th because we are closing the store that day so I and Melissa can attend a trade show and learn more about all the new books coming out.

The Honest Truth
The Honest Truth is a touching read about a boy who loves his dog, his best friend Jessie, taking pictures with his grandfather's old-fashioned camera, and writing haiku. But when Mark learns some devastating news, he heads out on a reckless attempt to climb Mt. Rainier on his own. For Mark to survive, he will need a miracle (or maybe two).

Scholastic Inc. - Release Date: 12/29/15 - Format: Paperback - Price: $6.99

A List of Things That Didn't Kill Me
Just like Jeannette Wals, Jason Schmidt survived his childhood (in Washington state in the '70s and '80s) in spite of his parents; and just like The Glass Castle, A List of Things That Didn't Kill Me is an extremely readable memoir that would make an incredible bookclub discussion book.

Farrar, Straus & Giroux - Release Date: 1/5/16 - Format: Paperback - Price: $10.99

The League of Beastly Dreadfuls
Paperback - $7.99

Violet and Victor Writer the Most Fabulous Fairy Tale
Violet is quite imaginative; Victor is rather realistic. Violet is on a quest to write the best fairy tale ever; Victor doesn't see the point. But when they collaborate on a story, something special happens. Twins Violet and Victor have a relationship not unlike most siblings, which makes it easy to see my own kids in these fictional children and their antics. There is enough sibling rivalry to make the tale realistic, but also shows how much good and fun can come from cooperation -- not to mention a good story!
