Celebrate the First Annual Independent Bookstore Day with Fiction Addiction
Greenville, SC, March 18, 2015 - Join us on May 2nd, 2015, to celebrate the first-ever Independent Bookstore Day (#bookstoreday) and Fiction Addiction's 14th anniversary! We will be hosting an all-day party: morning, noon, and night and everyone is invited.
In the morning...be lined up at the door by 10am for the first chance at limited-edition, collectible merchandise such as a signed Captain Underpants print, a broadside from Stephen King's forthcoming book Finders Keepers, a Huck Finn literary map, salty and sweet literary tea towel sets, and more! (The special merchandise will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will not be sold online for at least two weeks.) We will be serving Krispy Kreme donuts to the first 3 dozen folks through the door.
At noon...bring the family for family-friendly activities and birthday cake!
The first 50 children through the door will receive a free gift. Starting at noon, Lynne Holcombe will lead preschool children in a 45-minute interactive music adventure storytime experience, then at 1pm children ages 8-12 are invited to participate in our Book Scouts event featuring the middle-grade book Blackbird Fly by Erin Entrada Kelly.
Music Adventures allow kids to experiment with music elements through musical activities, songs, and introduction to various instruments. Adventures have specific themes, and imaginative musical play and exploration are encouraged. Owner Lynne Holcombe has been writing and performing music for close to 30 years and began her career as a music therapist, working mostly with special needs children. In addition to her structured classes at 1288 Pendleton St. (Greenville), Lynne is also available to travel for special events. You can find out more information by visiting the Facebook page or emailing Lynne directly.
Fiction Addiction's Book Scouts meet monthly, usually on the first Saturday of the month, at 1:00pm at Fiction Addiction, and meetings last approximately 1-1/2 hours. The program is designed for children ages 8-12. At each monthly meeting, Fiction Addiction shares information about a book that we love, brings in a guest speaker for related Show and Tell, has a fun activity, and closes with refreshments and handing out any Book Scout badges that children have earned. Come check it out and sign up your children!
At "night"...join us from 4-6pm to celebrate the launch of the magnificent essay collection, The World Is on Fire: Scrap, Treasure and Songs of Apocalypse (paperback, $16.00) by the Upstate's own Joni Tevis. Adult refreshments (perhaps even something with flames!) will be served.
Grappling with a fear rooted in her by the end times sermons of her Southern youth, Joni Tevis seeks out apocalypse, destruction, and their aftermath in this heart-wrenching, but ultimately triumphant collection. Mining sources as disparate as the Bible and nuclear history, Tevis couples seemingly unrelated phenomena to reveal deeper meaning: reflections on Buddy Holly's last days lead to the Doom Town, where the American government tested the effects of nuclear weapons on suburban populations. Liberace's last days are juxtaposed with the entertainment complex the military built around weapons testing. Relating her own experience of childbirth to an Italian medical museum and ANWR, she explores both creating and losing life in a world freighted with danger.
Throughout, Tevis brings a new sense of wonder to the objects and phenomena surrounding us, guiding the reader through a subtle arc from dread to acceptance, of the cycles of death and rebirth that rule our lives, even when we resist them.
About the author:
Formerly a park ranger, factory worker, and seller of cemetery plots, Joni Tevis is the author of The World Is on Fire and her previous acclaimed book of essays, The Wet Collection, described by Mark Doty as a "delightful and deeply satisfying book," and which was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award. Her work has been published in Oxford American, Bellingham Review, Shenandoah, Gulf Coast, and Orion. She currently teaches literature and creative writing at Furman University in Greenville, SC, where she also lives.
If you cannot make the event, you can reserve a personalized copy of the author's book by contacting Fiction Addiction in advance at 864-675-0540 or at info@fiction-addiction.com.
Save the date May 2nd on your calendars and then bring your family, your bookclub, or anyone who likes a good party!
