December 2014

As you do your last minute holiday shopping, we have some great suggestions! Our Holiday Catalog has great titles for everyone on your list, and the ABC Best Books for Children & Teens Catalog can help with children's gifts. Or if you want a more personal suggestion, our staff is always happy to help. Keep in mind that December 18th is the last day to place special orders to arrive in time for Christmas.

We recently upgraded the Fiction Addiction event calendar on our website. It's not a lot more colorful, and you have the option to subscribe to it through your own calendar (Google, Outlook, Apple, or any other iCal application) so you never miss any of our events again. Also, the upcoming events on the home page are now going to update automatically, so that will save Melissa a lot of time. Let us know what you think about the new format!

*Please note, starting in January, we are changing our store hours:

Monday - Friday: 10am to 5:30pm
Saturday: 10am to 4pm

Spare Parts
No one had ever suggested to Oscar, Cristian, Luis, or Lorenzo that they might amount to much -- but two inspiring science teachers had convinced these impoverished, undocumented kids from the desert who had never even seen the ocean that they should try to build an underwater robot. Their robot wasn't pretty, especially compared to those of the competition. And yet, against all odds...they won! But this is just the beginning for these four, whose story will go on to include first-generation college graduations, deportation, bean-picking in Mexico, and service in Afghanistan.

Science Fiction & Fantasy
There and Back Again
For decades, hobbits and the other fantastical creatures of Middle-earth have captured the imaginations of a fiercely loyal tribe of readers, all enhanced by the immense success of Peter Jackson's films. But for all Tolkien's global fame, the sources of the great mythmaker's own myth-making have been neglected. Mark Atherton here explores the chief influences on Tolkien's work: his boyhood in the West Midlands; the landscapes and seascapes which shaped his mythologies; his experiences in World War I; his interest in Scandinavian myth; his friendships, especially with the other Oxford-based Inklings; and the relevance of his themes, especially ecological ones, to the present day.
