November 2014

The holiday shopping season is upon us! If we haven't yet given you our Holiday Catalog with great book suggestions please stop by and pick one up. Signed books make awesome gifts so we've got a full event schedule for you over the next two months. And please remember to stop by and support us on Small Business Saturday, November 29th!

We had a lot of great applicants for our position and we have hired Kendall Neason to replace Kathleen. She is an avid reader and loves to talk and recommend books. She also happens to be the sister of local author, Mindy Friddle. She's still in training so please be patient with her as she learns all our systems.

Something Rich and Strange
Something Rich and Strange showcases acclaimed master Ron Rash's artistry and craftsmanship in thirty-two stories culled from previously published collections and two available for the first time in book form: "Outlaws" and "Shiloh." Each work of short fiction demonstrates Rash's dazzling ability to evoke the heart and soul of this land and its people -- men and women inexorably tethered to the geography that defines and shapes them. Filled with suspense and myth, hope and heartbreak, and told in language that flows like "shimmering, liquid poetry" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Something Rich and Strange is an iconic work from an American literary virtuoso.

Small Victories
Anne Lamott writes about faith, family, and community in essays that are both wise and irreverent. It's an approach that has become her trademark. Now in Small Victories, Lamott offers a new message of hope that celebrates the triumph of light over the darkness in our lives. Our victories over hardship and pain may seem small, she writes, but they change us -- our perceptions, our perspectives, and our lives. Lamott writes of forgiveness, restoration, and transformation, how we can turn toward love even in the most hopeless situations, how we find the joy in getting lost and our amazement in finally being found.

Leaving Time
I read Leaving Time over Mother's Day weekend and there couldn't have been a more appropriate read. It is a beautiful story about the bond between mothers and children in both the human world and the world of elephants. I loved the characters that Picoult used to tell her story -- a disgraced psychic, an alcoholic ex-cop, and a 13 year old girl. And I especially loved the fascinating look into the world of elephants. Picoult has given us another very readable, impeccably reasearched novel with a surprising and emotional ending that will knock your socks off.

This southern tale of poverty, tragedy, personal failure, and the elusive second chance is vivid and compelling. The primary voice is that of Easter, an amazing twelve year old girl who has matured far beyond her years. The Red Tent The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
If you missed this immensely readable novel the first time around, make sure to read it before it comes to TV. Diamant's novel is inspired by the Biblical story of Dinah, who is briefly mentioned in Genesis. From this Biblical nugget, Diamant has crafted a moving story about the strength of women, their roles in a male-dominated religious society, and their all- important relationships with each other. Please don't miss this novel a second time!

Burn for Me
Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton, Patricia Briggs, and Charlaine Harris will love Burn for Me, the first book in a new paranormal series by Ilona Andrews. Private eye Nevada Baylor is being blackmailed into a suicide mission to bring in a rogue Prime (the highest rank of magic user) who can set anything and everyone on fire. Prime Connor Rogan is also after the same target and they end up joining forces. Connor is the epitome of alpha male -- he's ex-military with powers that can level entire buildings -- but Nevada is no pushover and she's got her entire family to protect. I simply cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Chasers of the Light Chasers of the Light by Tyler Knott Gregson
Tyler Knott Gregson has gained fame for his pictures of poems he wrote and typed out on scrap pieces of paper on an old Remington typewriter. This book collects the best of his work, love poems that are sometimes intimate and sometimes vast and sweeping, brimming sometimes with joy and sometimes with unshed tears. It will take your breath away if you let it.

The Book of Strange New Things The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber
It is rare for me to read science fiction much less love it and recommend it but I found this to be one of my favorite reads in quite a while. Michel Faber brilliantly weaves a story of faith, calling and vocation, relationships and the many forms of distance. It is s story of salvation and redemption, subjects that do not belong exclusively to any religion. Though the main character is a Christian, sharing his faith, the themes are universal. Full of complex characters and shifting perspectives, the books manages to flow easily through the imagination. It pulled me in and along.
