I hope the school year is off to a good start for those of you who are teachers or have school-age children. I volunteered to serve on the American Bookseller Association's reading committee to discover debut middle-grade books and I've fallen in love with so many of the books I've read that I've decided to create a free Book Scouts event program specifically designed for children ages 8-12 (younger and elder siblings are welcome to attend as well, but books selected will be on a middle grade reading level). We will be holding the kickoff party on the 5th anniversary of Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day: Saturday, December 6th, 2014 at 1pm at the store so save the date! If you would like to receive our new Book Scouts Children's Email Newsletter, just reply to this email and let us know.
We are also looking for volunteers to help us out with the Book Scouts events (they will typically be the 1st Saturday of every month at 1pm unless a holiday weekend). If you're good with children, like to bake, or happen to raise baby chicks (we need some for Show & Tell for one of the events), just let me know at info@fiction-addiction.com!
Please note that I'll personally be out of the store from Thursday, August 28th thru Monday, attending the Dragon*Con Science Fiction Convention in Atlanta. The staff will be keeping the store open regular hours Thursday thru Sunday, but we'll be closed Monday, September 1st, for the Labor Day holiday.

Any fan of historical fiction will enjoy this book. The trials of a young orphan in a small village in France who spends all her life in Paris is tragic and heartwarming. The level of sacrifice felt by the French during the German occupation is horrific in description. A bit of a lovers triangle exists that adds to the depth of the characters. But the real prize of this book is the wonderful art history lesson. Any fan of the arts will enjoy the book for this lesson alone.
Random House - Release Date: 8/26/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.00
I loved Courtney's first book, so I had high expectations for her second book. I am happy to say that all my expectations were met. The three cousins in this book are so real that anyone with extended family will be able to identify with the interactions and relationships. The angst of parental relationships is described so well, and the actions of one generation impacting the next are clear. Any fan of contemporary women's fiction, the South, family dynamics, or just a good book will enjoy this book. Readers of Karen White, Kristin Hannah, and Mary Alice Monroe will enjoy this novel.
William Morrow - Release Date: 8/19/14 - Format: Paperback - Price: $14.99

I have enjoyed Carla's books for years. The characters and their development have evolved as and become deeper and more real with each book. I felt a special attachment to Emma Sharpe and hoped the series would do justice to her character. I should not have been concerned. This is the best book yet, and I was totally surprised by the plot twist. Any mystery fan or lover of Ireland should enjoy this book. For fans of Nora Roberts, Lisa Kleypas, Jayne Ann Krentz, or Kay Hooper.

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm
Ellie doesn't like how things have changed in her eleven years of life, the most recent change being that her best friend doesn't seem to be her best friend any more. Then her scientist grandfather shows up under very strange circumstances and shows Ellie a glimpse into the world of science -- Salk, Oppenheimer, Galileo, Newton -- and Ellie has to decide what changes she wants to make and which might not be worth the risk. A great introduction to science for interested kids, and Ellie will make it even more appealing for girls.

This book follows the intertwining lives of five individuals in the aftermath of a worldwide flu epidemic that wipes out most of the population. Moving back and forth in time, Mandel reveals the twists of fate that connect a Shakespearean actor, a former paparazzo who'd come to his aid, the actor's ex-wife, his oldest friend, and a child actress whose life he influenced. At times poignant and at times frightening, this well-written novel shows how much we depend on others, whether we know it or not. This book is for those who love great story -- telling, suspense created by what you don't see, and those who value the arts.

After two sold-out readings at The Warehouse Theatre, The Last Lynching gets an encore performance at Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (1135 State Park Rd., Greenville). The play, from former Handlebar co-owner John Jeter and Greenville scholar/historian/writer Lucy Beam Hoffman, tells about the largest lynching trial in U.S. history in 1947 Greenville. In the trial, 31 white taxi drivers were acquitted in the murder of a 24-year-old black man named Willie Earle, who had been accused of fatally stabbing one of their own. The case drew national and international attention -- and with such events as Ferguson, MO, and the Trayvon Martin shooting, the episode that put Greenville on the map continues to resonate. |
