The Sheltering
Luther Redding pilots a reaper drone over the mountains of Afghanistan from a command center in the bowels of Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base. Meanwhile, Bobby Rosen has returned home from his tours in Iraq to a broken marriage and an estranged son. As Bobby sets off on a drug-fueled road trip with his brother Donny, a sudden death in the Redding household sends Luther's daughter Katie spiraling into grief and self-destruction. Soon the lives of the Reddings and the Rosens intersect as the collateral damage from the war on terror sends these families into a rapid descent of violence and moral ambiguity. Overarching questions of faith and redemption clash with the rough-hewn realities of terror and loss, all to explosive ends in Powell's dark vision of modern Americana.

Poems of the American South
The arc of poetry of the South is richly varied and historically vibrant. No other region of the United States has been as mythologized as the South, nor contained as many contradictions. This collection includes poems both by Southerners and by famous observers of the South who hailed from elsewhere. Organized thematically, the anthology places poems from past centuries in fruitful dialogue with a diverse array of modern voices who are redefining the South with a verve that is reinvigorating American poetry as a whole.

What We See When We Read
The collection of fragmented images on a page -- a graceful ear there, a stray curl, a hat positioned just so -- and other clues and signifiers helps us to create an image of a character. But in fact our sense that we know a character intimately has little to do with our ability to concretely picture literary figures. Mendelsund combines his profession, as an award-winning designer; his first career, as a classically trained pianist; and his first love, literature, into what is sure to be one of the most provocative and unusual investigations into how we understand the act of reading.

General & Historical Fiction
The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion
Spanning decades, generations, and America in the 1940s and today, The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion is a fun-loving mystery about an Alabama woman today, and five women who in 1943 worked in a Phillips 66 gas station, during the WWII years. Like Fannie Flagg's classic Fried Green Tomatoes, this is a riveting, fun story of two families, set in present day America and during World War II, filled to the brim with Flagg's trademark funny voice and storytelling magic. Recommended for readers of Pat Conroy and Kathryn Stockett.

Random House - Release Date: 7/29/14 - Format: Paperback - Price: $15.00

Mystery, Suspense, & Thrillers

As he starts to uncover old lies and dirty secrets, though, he runs up against fierce opposition from those with the most to lose -- and they can play dirty themselves.

The Forsaken
John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Sycamore Row returns to that famous courthouse in Clanton where, after one of Ford County, Mississippi's wealthiest men hangs himself and leaves a baffling will, defense attorney Jack Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial -- a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history. Here, in his most assured and thrilling novel yet, is a powerful testament to the fact that Grisham remains the master of the legal thriller.

Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty - Signed First Editions Available!
This book kept me up way too late because I couldn't put it down. Moriarty has a knack for creating characters who are so believable they could easily be someone you know. You are teased from the beginning of this book with something awful that happens at the annual school fundraiser. Along the way, you discover some of the dangerous little lies that people tell just to be able to face the day. I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened that night, but at the same time, I was sorry that I wouldn't be reading any more about the inhabitants of Perriwee.

Seconded by Jill Hendrix, store owner.

Frankie Malone is a young female police officer with a debilitating secret, who hopes helping Able clear himself will get her promoted to detective and not fired. I hope this is just the beginning of of a new police procedural series starring Able and Malone.

365 Ways to Criticize the Preacher
A slim novel that follows a year in the life of Beverly Roberts, a cranky parishioner in a small Southern rural church. The reader gets to know her, become impatient with her, laugh at her, dislike her, but eventually love her through her daily diary entries. With an equal mix of humor and poignancy, the author reveals the intimate details of Beverly's life to help us understand why she behaves, and at times misbehaves, the way she does. I recommend this book for anyone who has been acquainted with, related to, or even been a Beverly Roberts; in other words, everyone.

The Girls from Corona del Mar
Two girls, Mia and Lorrie Ann, grow up together, lives intertwined, friendship bringing them closer than sisters. However, growing up means growing apart, and with distance, the discovery of secrets, of illusions, and what they wished had been true reveal that the trajectory of life is never straight. Intense love and faith in each other remains, but is that enough to heal a life? This is a raw look at young female friendship as it matures to the reality of adulthood.

Heartless
I had just begun to have an interest in fantasy novels when I stumbled upon Heartless. I was taken away by the creativity and adventure Anne Elisabeth Stengl brought into the story. After reading this captivating book, I am now a full convert to fantasy novels!

The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic
I can see this becoming a cult classic with women who've grown up on fantasy but also love the romance of Pride and Prejudice. Don't let the heft fool you -- this was a very fast read and what I hope will be the first of a series.

Recommended in hardcover by Jill.
