July 2014

Thank you for a very successful June. We had a slew of great events with our favorite summer beach read authors (Dottie Frank, Karen White, Mary Kay Andrews, Mary Alice Monroe, Patti Callahan Henry, etc.). I hope you were able to catch at least one of the events. If not, we still have signed stock left for most of the authors.

I'm now completely exhausted and am happily going to the beach for the next week. Kathleen, Melissa, and Cyndi will be holding down the fort and happy to help you with any of your book-related needs.

The store will be closed, Friday July 4th, but if you're in town make sure to stop by on Saturday, July 5th to meet some of our area's great independent authors who will be signing throughout the day. See our events section below for more information.

On July 5th, come celebrate the underdog writers who put themselves out there, sometimes at their own expense, because they've got a story to tell. To see our author schedule, please visit our website at www.fiction-addiction.com.

The very first draft of Divergent began with the hair-cutting scene, but it was told from Tobias's point of view. When Veronica Roth went back to the manuscript some time later, she realized that in order for the Divergent story to be exceptionally compelling, it needed to be told from Tris's perspective. But over the course of the first two books, Tobias's voice still clamored to be heard, eventually becoming an integral part of Allegiant. Now, Veronica Roth has written four stories about Tobias Eaton's life told from Tobias's point of view.

How to Tell Toledo from the Night Sky
A quirky, geeky, wonderful feel-good love story, unlike anything you have ever read. It has poetry, black holes, dreams, astronomy, super-colliders, psychics, destiny, unrequited love, and the strangest pre-arranged marriage you will ever see. It goes from weird to serious, from funny to sad, but in the end, it is an honest and emotional look at the nature of true love.

St. Martin's Griffin - Release Date: 7/1/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $25.99

Flying Shoes Lisa Howorth deftly weaves together a beautiful story of the South, family, relationships, racial issues, and unresolved guilt. She takes seemingly unrelated strands of stories of people who are important in Mary Byrd's life and intertwines them until you understand how the unsolved murder of Mary Byrd's young brother 30 years ago and the guilt she has carried around since then have made her the cynical, needy, self-destructive, funny, and very likable character she is today.

Bloomsbury - Release Date: 6/17/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00

Land of Shadows As Detective Lou Norton and her new partner investigate the death of a young black teenage girl, Lou keeps seeing links to her sister's murder 30 years ago. She doggedly pursues clues and leads and goes back and interviews witnesses from her sister's case. Lou is tough and street smart, but at the same time, she is a vulnerable wife with a philandering husband and a daughter, who is still filled with guilt for leaving her sister alone years ago. A great new voice in crime fiction. I can't wait to see more from LA Homicide Detective Lou Norton.

Forge Books - Release Date: 6/10/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $24.99

Board Stiff A terrific blend of mystery, humor, and just enough sexual tension to make it interesting. Elliot Lisbon has an interesting job as the director of the prestigious Ballantyne Foundation. The story is set on an island off the coast of SC. The mystery is believable, and the culprit and motive are surprising. The writing is sharp and witty. The characters are fun and quirky. What more could you ask for in a great cozy? I can't wait to read more about Elliot Lisbon and her quest for her private investigator's license. Fans of Susan Boyer will love it.

Henery Press - Release Date: 4/30/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $15.95

The Ways of the Dead Scarred and battered, investigative reporter Sully Carter pounds the beat for his story, fighting politicians, the police, and his own newspaper while looking for the truth. He wants to write about several missing women and a prostitute recently found dead, who are all from a gritty area of DC. But not until a judge's daughter is found dead nearby does his newspaper or the MPD even care about those other crimes. Twists and turns and a surprise ending leave a great opening for the next installment!

The Viking Press - Release Date: 6/12/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.95

Never Coming Back David Raker is recuperating from almost being stabbed to death, but he can't say no when an old girlfriend asks him to solve the mysterious disappearance of her sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces. The action leaves you on the edge of your seat, and the ever developing plot pulls you in deeper and deeper as Raker's tenacity and no holds barred approach gets you closer and closer to what you think the truth is. More twists and turns than a roller coaster and surprise after surprise up to the very last page make this a thriller you won't want to miss.

The Viking Press - Release Date: 7/3/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.95

Suspicion Ingrid Thoft meets Janet Evanovich. What starts out as a quest for the identity of the sperm donor for several single moms soon ends up as a murder investigation when said donor turns up dead. Action packed and fast paced, you'll want to become friends with Fina, whose sassy mouth is a cover-up for a lot of hurt in a family that is not "The Waltons".

Bantam - Release Date: 7/1/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00

The Summer Wind After enjoying the first book in this series, I could not wait for the next installment, and it was well worth the wait. It is hard to beat the interaction of a blended family of southern women. The continuing tale of the dolphin rescue adds interest to the story, but the heart of these books are the amazing women and their all too real lives. The half sisters are so different, but you will fall in love with each of them. I cannot wait for the next installment of this series. Perfect to take to the beach, but so much more than a beach book.

Gallery Books - Release Date: 6/17/14 - Format: Paperback - Price: $16.00

Phantom Instinct I was already a Meg Gardiner fan, but if I hadn't been, this book would have hooked me. A twisting plot where the enemy is difficult to identify and it is hard to know friend from foe. The incorporation of brain injury is a key part of the story and well developed. Any fan of Karin Slaughter, Tami Hoag, Allison Brennan, or Kat Martin will enjoy this book.

Guardian Guardian by Alex London
Syd has become the symbol of the Rebooters' revolution. It's a dangerous job, which he can't seem to grasp, despite the repeated warnings of Liam, Syd's bodyguard. But there are dangers that even Liam can't protect Syd from -- like the disease that is slowly working its way through the population, starting with the Guardians. And it looks like the only way to cure it is to reverse the revolution that Syd and Knox started. Lots of action and a little romance make this a great read, even better than the first book, Proxy.

Spider Woman's Daughter Spider Woman's Daughter by Anne Hillerman
Anne Hillerman continues the beloved Leaphorn and Chee series that Tony Hillerman fans have missed since his death. The author has so expertly captured the voice of her father's novels that, if I hadn't known better, I would have thought he'd written it. Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito are back, this time investigating the shooting of a close colleague. The younger generation of investigators takes the lead in this Navajo Country mystery, and like Anne Hillerman, is up to the challenge.

Alina's scant happiness after escaping the Darkling doesn't last long before the Darkling finds her again, intent as ever to claim Alina and her power for his own. But with the help of a notorious pirate (er...privateer), she manages to escape again. But this time, she's not hiding. This time, she wants to use her power. The question is, will Alina be able to control her power, or will the power control her? I'm as much in love with this trilogy now as I was after reading the first book, and I'm so excited the conclusion, Ruin and Rising, is finally here!
