February 2014

Greetings!

We have been overwhelmed by your enthusiastic response to our Trust Fall request! We will  be getting some signed copies of the book, but not enough for everyone who responded, so I've been trying to think of the fairest way to allocate the signed books. How about if everyone who prepays for the book prior to the release date of 2/11/14 gets a signed copy? If you all prepay, then I guess we'll just have to draw names! To prepay for the book, either call us at 864-675-0540, stop by the store, or pay online

To help meet your book-buying needs in 2014, we have decided to open the store on Sundays from Noon-4:00pm. Stop by and say hi to Cynthia and grab a book, perfect for passing time on those lazy Sunday afternoons!

Also, don't forget to renew your Reward Card for 2014. This is the last month to renew and still have your previous year's purchases rollover. The cost is $10 for 2014 and includes some great benefits, such as a $10 reward coupon for every $100 spent on merchandise, as well as being able to take advantage of our book trade-in system.

We hope you enjoy receiving these newsletters, but if you need to unsubscribe, click here to update your preferences.

February New Releases
Nonfiction
Pigs Can't Swim
An outrageous, hilarious, and touching memoir of childhood as the youngest of nine children in a hardscrabble, beyond-eccentric Maine family. With everything happening on Helen Peppe's backwoods Maine farm: ferocious sibling rivalry, rock-bottom poverty, feral male chauvinism, sex in the hayloft -- life was out of control, even for the animals. Peppe manages deadpan humor, an unerring eye for the absurd, and a touching compassion for her utterly overwhelmed parents that will remind readers of Jeanette Wall.

Glitter and Glue
When Corrigan arrived in Australia in the summer of 1992, the only job she could find was as a nanny -- to a household still reeling with grief from the recent loss of the mother. Completely unprepared, Kelly spent five months trying to help the Tanner family pick up the pieces. And to her surprise, she found herself quietly deferring to the wisdom of her mother, who once told the young Kelly that her charming father "may be the glitter, but I'm the glue," a pattern that would become more pronounced years later, when Kelly's own daughters were born, and it turned out that each and every day demanded her mother's signature conviction and grit. This is a story about growing up and stepping up, but most of all, it's about the great adventure of motherhood.

Jim McFarlane Recommends...
Revolutionary
Deborah Sampson received more freedom and respect after disguising herself as a man to join the Continental Army than she ever received as an indentured servant or as a free woman with no male relatives to oversee her. Recommended for anyone who likes realistic historical fiction about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

The Girl with a Clock for a Heart
Liana Dector is the definition of a femme fatale, with the emphasis on fatale. George is a typical nice guy who had the misfortune of meeting and falling in love with Liana as a young, impressionable college student -- an experience which stayed with him his entire, up-to-now boring life. Liana is the mystery in this noirish tale which is reminiscent of Body Heat and classic Hitchcock. Once you start reading you will be like George, hooked on Liana until you can hopefully discover who she really is.

William Morrow - Release Date: 2/4/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $25.99

Before We Met Hannah doesn't trust any man -- until she meets Mark. He seems to be the perfect man, with none of the flaws she saw in her mother's bitter, unhappy marriage. But 8 months into their idyllic life, she begins to question things. His explanations seem to be believable, and he seems to only have her best interests at heart, until the next strange happening. Don't give up on this book because you think you know the ending -- you will probably be wrong. Before We Met is a nail biter with more twists and turns than you can keep track of.

Bloomsbury - Release Date: 1/21/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $25.00

Doing Harm Steve Mitchell is a happily married senior surgical resident with a wife and two kids and the promise of a dream job at a great teaching hospital when all starts to horribly fall apart. He lets his ambition cloud his judgment and botches an operation. Then things really go wrong. Intelligently written with medical accuracy, this book will leave you terrified and troubled. Illness isn't the only thing that kills in this hospital. The vivid portrayal of life-and-death decisions, complicated by a sociopath on staff, has this debut author headed for a bestseller...

Pierio Kaparov is an unusual heroine. Unconventional, tough, smart and damaged she is loyal to a fault . Driven by the desire to do something to please her unloving father and the need to find out if the hit and run at sea that killed her friend and almost killed her, Pierio tackles ruthless fisherman, wealthy industrialists and the harsh environment of the artic sea to find the truth. A great start to what I hope will be a series featuring Pierio and investigative journalist Russell Parnell.

Jackie Recommends...
This Dark Road to Mercy I loved this book of family dynamics. This southern tale of poverty, tragedy, personal failure, and the elusive second chance is vivid and compelling. The primary voice is that of Easter, an amazing twelve-year-old girl who has matured far beyond her years. Baseball fans will probably appreciate added dimensions of the home run quest so central to the events. Any true fan of southern literature should not miss this book.

Seconded by Jill, Jim, and Nancy M.

A Star for Mrs. Blake
When five Gold Star Mothers travel to France to visit the graves of their sons who died a decade earlier in WW1, they find they may need just us much courage as their heroic offspring. I loved this touching peek into a bit of history I knew nothing about.

Alfred A. Knopf - Release Date: 1/14/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $24.95

The Secret of Magic The Secret of Magic by Deborah JohnsonSigned Copies Available!
Set in Mississippi at the close of WW2, The Secret of Magic is the story of the tragic treatment of a returning black GI, which draws in noted civil rights attorney Thurgood Marshall. But it also a story about the power of books and stories, especially those we encounter as children, to affect lives. I loved this book and will be recommending it to fans of The Help and Mudbound.

Amy Einhorn Books - Release Date: 1/21/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.95

I Shall Be Near to You I Shall Be Near to You by Erin Lindsay McCabe
Pat Conroy and I both love this novel told from the point of view of Rosetta Wakefield, who disguises herself as a man and fights in the Civil War alongside her husband. A beautiful love story, a fast fast read, and a gripping view of history -- I Shall Be Near to You is the perfect bookclub read.

Archetype
Emma has just woken up with no memories. Her husband, Declan, is very involved in her recovery, taking time to care for her and help her re-learn everything. But then Emma starts to have nightmares and dreams that she begins to think may be more real than the life she's come to know -- memories of another husband on a beach, of a resistance movement and a war. When Emma's two lives collide, she has to decide whom to trust before both lives are snuffed out. Debut author Waters handles backstory brilliantly in this great futuristic sci-fi novel that will lead readers to question ethical situations they may never have considered in exactly these circumstances.

Dutton - Release Date: 2/6/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.95

Cress
Cress was sentenced to death upon birth for lacking abilities inherent in most Lunars. But one of the queen's military leaders saw Cress's talent for all things electronic and took Cress instead to a satellite, where she has been imprisoned for the past seven years, creating a network for Queen Levana to spy on Earth. But Cress has secret loyalties to Earthens, especially handsome, heroic ones like Captain Carswell Thorne. This book is amazing, continuing the trend of greatness I've come to expect from Meyer. The characters are great, the storylines are great, there was lots of action and plenty of romance. It will be a pleasure to hand this book to anyone eagerly awaiting the next installment of the Lunar Chronicles.

Feiwel & Friends - Release Date: 2/4/14 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $18.99

Cruel Beauty
Nyx has always known that her destiny is to marry the demon lord who rules her kingdom. She has been trained by her father to destroy the demon's house, and probably die herself in the process, in order to avenge her mother's death. But when she meets her new husband, Ignifex isn't the evil demon Nyx expected, and now she isn't sure that he deserves the betrayal she's been tasked with doling out. Hodge mixes myth and fairy tale beautifully in her debut novel. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next.

If You Want to See a Whale
This is now among one of my all time favorite picture books. The illustrations are beautiful and calming, as are the verses instructing a boy on what he needs to do, and not do, to see a whale. Every page is a lesson in the value of patience, the wonder of nature, and staying focused on your goal. This book is perfect for bedtime reading for children of all ages, even those of us way past childhood.

The Runaway Hug
When Lucy asks her mom for a hug before she goes to bed, her mom jokes that she only has one hug left, so Lucy promises to keep it safe. Her household is loving and chaotic, and Lucy runs around the house to make sure everyone shares in the hug, and then returns it to her mom. Until the dog. Lucy is sure the hug is gone forever. But this is a heartwarming bedtime tale for young children, so of course, all ends quite happily and sweetly. The illustrations go hand-in-hand with this story that you will be happy to read again and again to your children.
