I recommend this book to high school students who are interested in a career in science. In addition to linking biological evolution, geological evolution, stellar evolution, and the astronomical search for exoplanets, the author's mini-biographies of several scientists explore the dreams that impelled them toward a scientific life.

Kay Hamilton is a tough, hard-hitting DEA agent. She is also fiercely determined, and totally off the grid, when she sets out to rescue her daughter who has been kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. Rosarito Beach is an explosive, action-packed thriller written by a master in the genre. It is the start of a new series and I can't wait for the next installment.
Blue Rider Press - Release Date: 12/31/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.95
In the Blood is the ultimate psychological thriller. It is deep, dark, stunning, shocking, and every other adjective you can imagine. It is the story of Lana Granger, a girl trying very hard to hide from her extremely troubled childhood as she finishes up her college course in abnormal psychology. It is also the story of the other people in her life: her roommate Beck, who goes missing under strange circumstances, her mentor and professor Langdon Hewes, and Luke, the disturbed child whom Lana hopes to help.

Anyone who likes ghost stories will enjoy this book. The couple who find their starter house are engaging and very human. I look forward to more novels by this debut South Carolina author.

In this twisting story of an extended family in France, everyone has a secret. There are a lot of characters, but Josephine is at the center of all the stories. She starts as a typically downtrodden wife with an unemployed husband, overbearing and perfect sister, attractive teenage daughter, horrid Mother, and a low-paying job that she adores and everyone else looks down on. Like The Elegance of the Hedgehog, the story begins slowly, but as it builds you become invested in seeing how the various secrets will be revealed and where Josephine will land at the end.

Reading Billy Collins' poetry, it's easy to see why he holds such popular appeal. His poems are easily accessible by even the most casual of poetry readers, his imagery perfectly stated without becoming too much to wade through. This collection of new and selected poems brings together some of the best of Collins' work from the last twelve years, showcasing his trademark voice that will sometimes amuse, sometimes awe, and always surprise with a twist that will make you see the poems in a whole new light.
Random House - Release Date: 10/22/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00

Dog Songs is a wonderful collection of poems about the dogs that have been part of Oliver's life. She artfully captures their essence, from their exasperating idiosyncrasies to their unfailing loyalty. These dogs are explorers, lovers, friends, hedonists, and secret-keepers -- hers and theirs. They are also "children of the earth" who remind us of our own connection to nature and how important that is. This book is for everyone who has gladly shared their life with dogs and become better for it.
The Penguin Press - Release Date: 10/8/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.95

This is one of the best-written books I've ever read. It's categorized as YA, but don't let that deter you from reading it. And if you shy away, thinking it's one more book about the Holocaust, don't. It's written with such a fresh perspective, and such beautiful uses of language, you will find yourself not wanting to put it down. Zusak shows us that not every German believed in the Nazi party and how there were good people who committed small acts of subterfuge, risking their own lives in order to retain their humanity.
