Graphic Novels
The 47 RoninThe 47 Ronin by Sean Michael Wilson
In the eighteenth century, 47 samurai avenged the death of their master in a plot that would take over two years to complete. After succeeding in their mission, the masterless samurai -- known as ronin -- all committed ritual suicide. The story, which is a national legend, remains the most potent example of Japan's deeply rooted cultural imperative of honor, persistence, loyalty, and sacrifice.

What Local Authors Are Reading
Jim McFarlane Recommends...
The Midwife's Tale The Midwife's Tale by Sam Thomas -- Now in Paperback!
Sam Thomas writes historical fiction the way I enjoy it: where the mindset (know your "station" and stay there) and the setting (York under siege during the English Civil War) are major characters who frequently assist or hinder the protagonist, but are always interesting. For example, a midwife was licensed by the city and in return had to force an unmarried mother-to-be to identify the father so that the father instead of the church poor fund would support the bastard child. Excellent novel, excellent mystery, excellent historical fiction.

Release Date: 12/10/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $14.99

Jim McFarlane is the author of the historical novel Penelope.

The Absence of Mercy
The Absence of Mercy is a chilling psychological thriller that will both surprise and sadden. It will haunt your dreams and make you pull your children close to you.

Release Date: 11/19/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $14.99

Once Upon a Lie Beautifully written and with a bit of wit, Once Upon a Lie, is a compelling look at family secrets and loyalties, friendship, and retribution. Maeve Conlon is the divorced mother of two hard-to-handle teenage daughters, she is a struggling small business owner, and is responsible for her retired police-detective father who is succumbing to dementia. If that wasn't enough to drive her off the deep end, she soon finds it necessary to clear her father from suspicion in the shooting death of her cousin Sean.

Someone Else's Love StorySomeone Else's Love Story by Joshilyn Jackson - Signed First Editions Available!

Once Upon a MemoryOnce Upon a Memory by Nina Laden
Before and after take on new meaning in Laden's book, which follows a child trying to determine if a feather remembers when it was a bird, or if a book remembers it used to be just words. Gorgeous illustrations accompany the whimsical text in this picture book that asks, "What will you remember?" A book to be shared and cherished by parents and children everywhere.

Release Date: 12/3/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $17.00

Bits & PiecesBits & Pieces by Judy Schachner
Tink is a well-loved cat who has everything he could ever want. But when he's taken to the vet one day, it begins an obsession with the great outdoors that even a kitten companion can't overcome. It takes a big adventure for Tink to learn how much his family really does love him in beloved author Judy Schachner's adorable new picture book that kids are sure to love to Bits & Pieces.

Release Date: 10/22/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $17.99

Fault LineFault Line by C. Desir
I can see this being a really important book, along the lines of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, but for a slightly older audience. Ben blames himself for his girlfriend Ani being drugged and raped at a party. Ani also blames herself and falls into a downward spiral, becoming promiscuous because she feels that's all that defines her any more. Ben wants to help Ani but doesn't know how, when she doesn't seem to want help. This book is more for friends and loved ones of people who have been raped, rather than for the victims themselves. It's an interesting perspective, and I think this could inspire a lot of good conversation about how to empathize with and help rape survivors. But be warned, there are a lot of triggers.

Release Date: 10/15/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $16.99

Kathleen Recommends...
Little SantaLittle Santa by Jon Agee - Signed First Editions Available!
Have you ever wondered how Santa became Santa? What kind of child he was and what his family was like? I loved Jon Agee's vision of Little Santa's childhood, starting with the opening illustration of the boy Santa's round belly poking out of his red onesie.  Every page is a treat. Don't read any reviews ahead of time; there are way too many spoilers. This book will make a wonderful keepsake and holiday gift for children and adults alike.

Release Date: 10/17/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $17.99

The Interestings The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer
In 1974, six friends meet at a summer arts camp in upstate New York. Five are from wealthy homes, but one, Jules, is not -- her outsider's perspective on these friends and their lives forms the center of The Interestings, which tells their story over the next four decades. This is a funny, touching, and beautifully written story of friendship, secrets, sadness, envy, loyalty -- and, basically, life.

Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day was founded in 2010 by Jenny Milchman as she took her children to bookstores across the country as they traveled.
