Christmas Shoes is a nonprofit organization in Greenville that provides new shoes to children in need ages 6 months to 18 years.
|
In support of (print) books and indie bookstores, a group of authors gathered together with SIBA in New Orleans earlier this fall to make a video where they all read aloud from Lane Smith's It's a Book (Roaring Brook Press, hardcover, $12.99), while holding their own print books. SIBA is looking for more people -- like you! -- to join their "radical underground movement for good" by sharing and linking to the "It's a Book!" video, in the hopes that this "underground" print and indie partnership will erupt nationwide.

The Discovery of Middle Earth by Graham RobbNot about J.R.R. Tolkien. The Celts in Gaul were more advanced in astronomy and engineering than Caesar would have you believe. Recommended for engineers, scientists and historians.Release Date: 11/4/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $28.95

The Last Winter of Dani Lancing is a masterfully written psychological novel that is told out of sequence and from multiple points of view. The fact that the author pulls this off beautifully and still tells a strong tale of grief, love, and revenge that twists and turns to get to the end is amazing. There are lots of what ifs, and lots of questions to which there may be no answers. It would be a fantastic book club read as each reader will have their own interpretation of who was really guilty and of what.Release Date: 10/8/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.00
A delightful page-turner! It was fun to reconnect with Bennie and her associates as well as the 3 Tony's and Mary's great Italian family. A good murder mystery with a happy ending. I think Scottoline has matured in her Rosato series and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!Release Date: 10/29/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.99
Where the Moon Isn't by Nathan Filer Written from the perspective of a 19-year-old mental patient, Where the Moon Isn't takes you on a gripping journey through a child's descent into schizophrenia and hopefully out the other side. Anyone who is fascinated with psychology and the way various mental illnesses manifest will love this book. Release Date: 11/5/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $24.99
|
This is a haunting story about the treatment of mental illness in the early 1900s, focused on Highland Hospital in Asheville, NC where Zelda Fitzgerald died in the fire that destroyed the hospital in 1948. While Zelda is a character in this book, the story is told through the voice of Evalina Toussaint who is sent to the hospital as a young child. Her story is a brutal example of the early treatment of mental illness where some patients were no more than subjects for experiments. Any fan of the Fitzgeralds, the medical profession, or the history of the early 1900s will enjoy this book.
Release Date: 10/15/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $25.95
I really enjoyed the first installment in this series and am happy to say I like this book as much, if not more. The characters are very human and entertaining. Honor is someone that almost every woman will relate to in some manner. Any fan of Kristan Higgins should enjoy this book. Also for fans of Susan Wiggs, Sheryl Woods, Lisa Kleypas and Debbie Macomber.
Release Date: 10/29/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $7.99

Carolina Sparrow is a driven NYC lawyer who is determinedly focused on her career. Josephine Bell, a house slave in the 1850s, was similarly focused on her quest for freedom. Conklin does a masterful job comparing the lives of these two amazingly strong women who are both raised in the absence of the traditional family unit. The incorporation of archived letters telling of events at the time are fascinating to read. While a happy ending to a story involving slavery is not possible, the characters and their journey make this book a compelling read.

She flees back to London and hides in plain sight as a nobleman's cook, only to discover that a woman belowstairs has very little protection. A fabulous historical novel full of espionage, romance, and French food!Release Date: 10/22/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $16.00
Anything But Sweet by Candis TerryThis first in a contemporary romance series about 4 brothers, all military or ex-military men, celebrates small-town life with an emotional depth that is reminiscent of Catherine Anderson's work. A great new author to look out for!Release Date: 6/25/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $5.99

Then a new boy, Justin, comes to class with different traditions, and the other kids laugh at him, too. Brian is willing to be Justin's friend, but will Justin still want to be Brian's friend when the other kids decide to include Justin after all? Dream Animals by Emily Winfield Martin The stars become animals taking children to their dream worlds in this lyrical picture book. Join them on their bedtime journeys while following the exquisite illustrations that are perfect for being sent to dreamland.

Tandem by Anna Jarzab Sasha Lawson was raised by her grandfather, a theoretical physicist, so parallel universes are not a foreign concept to her. But she's still not prepared to actually meet someone from another world, or to go there herself. When she wakes up in Aurora and is told that she must impersonate the princess, she fights to go back to her own life. The General has other plans for her, though, and secrets she has to uncover before she can escape -- if she still wants to after getting to know two boys seeking her affection. The start of a new YA trilogy with a great blend of world building and relationships that I think will appeal to fans of Ally Condie's Matched trilogy who want more fantasy.Release Date: 10/8/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $17.99
Freakboy by Kristin Elizabeth Clark Written in a verse style very similar to Ellen Hopkins, Clark addresses the issue of gender identity, specifically with teens, writing from three different points of view. Brendan is a senior, born male, who has lately felt like he'd rather be a girl. Vanessa is Brendan's girlfriend, who's struggling with the distance that Brendan has put between them with no explanation. And Angel is a transgender female who's offered to be a kind of mentor to Brendan. This book has an important message about gender identity that seems to be overlooked in most of the conversations we have about sexuality.Release Date: 10/22/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $18.99

The Death of Santini by Pat Conroy - Signed Copies Available!
This memoir is a beautiful but emotionally difficult read; however, anyone who has read and liked Pat Conroy will like this book. Conroy has made no secret that his previous works of fiction are based on his family history, and here we learn about his life, his parents and siblings, and the childhood destroyed by their father, Don Conroy. I was astonished to learn that his father was actually worse than the character Bull Meechum in The Great Santini, and that the author was able to forgive him. But the realm of forgiveness is a personal one, and by the end of the memoir Conroy offers enough insight to help the reader understand how this is possible. I highly recommend this to all Conroy fans.

Road to Valor by Aili and Andres McConnon Gino Bartali was a poor Italian boy who became a famous cyclist and won two Tours de France ten years apart, making his the greatest comeback in Tour De France history. But what is more remarkable is what he did in those intervening years during WWII. Using his fame as a shield, he was part of the Italian resistance movement and carried counterfeit identity documents inside his bicycle frame and hid a Jewish family from the Nazis. This suspenseful, inspiring book is a perfect choice for history buffs, Tour de France fans, and Greenville residents during our Year of Altruism. I loved this book.Release Date: 6/11/13 - Format: Paperback - Price: $15.00

The Mischievians by William Joyce The amazing William Joyce has done it again with this beautifully-illustrated, imaginative, and oh-so-clever book. Have you ever wondered where your missing homework has gone to? Dr. Zooper explains, it was stolen by the Homework Eater. Or why your feet get blisters? That's the Mischievian called Mista Blista. And of course, the Mischievian responsible for songs you hate getting stuck in your head is the Earworm! Dr. Zooper answers these pressing questions and more in the most entertaining Q&A session I've ever read. You and your children will want to read this book over and over again.Release Date: 10/22/13 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $17.99
