As Hurricane Sandy takes aim at the Mid-Atlantic coast, advance preparations bring some of the nation's busiest cities to a standstill. From North Carolina to Maine, hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes, transportation systems have reduced or ceased operations and National Guard troops have been summoned to assist. As hurricane preparations continue, forecasters warned that Sandy was likely to collide with a cold front and spawn a "superstorm" that could generate flash floods, snowstorms and massive power outages. Sandy has already proved its deadly wrath, claiming at least 67 lives, as it smashed through the Caribbean last week. U.S. landfall is expected by later this evening.
