Question Of The Week

Question:  "What is a hidden file?"

Answer:  A hidden file is just like any other file except that you won't see it listed anywhere on the computer by default.  (Remember, "default" means how software acts "out of the box" without the computer user making any changes.)  A hidden file uses just as much hard drive space as if it were visible.

Why would someone want to hide a file?  When software writers create their different programs, they often hide files which the computer user doesn't need to access, normally.  These files are needed but no interaction between the computer user and the file is necessary.  By hiding files (or folders, which can also be hidden) the computer user sees less clutter and won't accidently delete needed files.

Additionally, computer users themselves can hide a file, if they so choose.  Hiding a file or folder, however, should not be done as a security measure as it is very easy to "unhide" hidden files and folders, as you'll see in the link below.

You can find out if files are being hidden on your computer and you can change the setting if you want by following the steps outlined HERE.
