Dear La Entrada Community, Class Placement for 2015-16:
This article outlines our class placement process for La Entrada students in grades 4-8. The faculty spends considerable thought, and attention formulating classes that will work best for students. The teachers and administrators consider three major perspectives as we work together to develop class groupings: the needs of the individual child, the need to create balance within each classroom, and the need to create balance among classrooms at a grade level. The teachers work carefully to create classrooms that are evenly balanced in terms of: - Gender, social maturity, interest, student background
- Academics-high, medium, and low performing students
- Special needs-students who work with our many specialists such as English Learner Support, Speech and Language, the Resource Program, Reading and/or Math Intervention
- Health and other special needs
- Social relationships
For Students Entering Grades 4-5: The process for composing classes involves all teachers at a grade level working together to develop classes for the next grade. As they work together during several meetings, the administration and support staff also provide perspectives based on their knowledge of the children. As appropriate, input from prior teachers is tapped. We believe that your child's current teacher possesses the necessary information and understanding concerning your child to make an appropriate grouping for the coming school year. Teachers' names are not assigned until after the class configurations are complete. In order to maintain balance in class size, we may have multi-graded classes. For the 2015-16 school year, we anticipate a 4/5 multi-grade class. Multi-grade classes are of the same high caliber as all other classes. These classes are formed using the same process described above.
We do expect that parents will trust and respect the judgment of the staff in making classroom placement decisions. We do not accept requests for specific teachers because such requests would compromise our ability to develop balanced classes - which would impact all children. Since requests for specific teachers are not helpful to this process, we ask that you do not formally or informally make requests for specific teachers.
While we do not accept teacher requests, it is helpful for us to know if you have had an older child in a specific classroom that did not work well for him or her. If you wish to provide additional perspectives on your child that you believe we are not aware of and that could be useful to us as we engage in the grouping process, we offer that opportunity through email to me (spotts@llesd.org). Remember, this is optional. There is no expectation that an email be sent. It is simply our way of offering an additional opportunity for those of you who want to provide more input. Please note that while we do our best to accommodate student needs in the core classroom, the process for math placement may not allow for such requests.
For Students Entering Grades 6-8:
The process for these grade levels is much more "technology" dependent because we offer students a wide variety of courses in a manner that is more typical of a high school. We use a computer system to do the scheduling of students in grades 6-8. The process looks like this: - The students fill out their registration forms, listing their elective choices for the following year. (This has already happened.)
- We develop a master schedule that has the highest probability of meeting the highest percent of student requests. This is a list of classes, what periods of the day the classes will take place, the teachers for each class, maximum number of students for the class, and the room the classes take place in.
- Students' elective choices are entered into the system, as well as a list of the required courses they must take.
- The computer places the students into a schedule which allows for the closest match of the student getting his/her top elective choices, as well as the required courses.
- The computer generates a list of students who were unable to be scheduled completely. We then look at the students' other elective choices to see how to make the schedule work, and we also experiment with other variations of the master schedule.
- We print out a list of all classes and make necessary adjustments to try to balance the class groupings.
In August, the administration and counselors review and finalize class lists to accommodate students who have enrolled or moved away over the summer. We put tremendous effort into creating balanced classes to meet the needs of all of our students. We are continually refining the process and are proud of our results. If you have important information about your child's placement for next year, please let the classroom teacher know, or submit that information to me in writing before April 15, 2015. Any placement information received after this date may not be considered due to our placement schedule unless there are extenuating circumstances. If you've sent information in prior years that is still relevant, please include that information as well. Thank you for your cooperation in adhering to this deadline. Shannon Potts

LA ENTRADA PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"Understanding Eating Disorders: Helping Your Child Develop a Healthy Body Image" with Dr. Pamela Carlton, The Carlton Clinic
Thursday, March 26, 7:00 p.m.
La Entrada MUR
2200 Sharon Road, Menlo Park
How can you help your child develop a healthy body image? Bombarded by media messages that equate weight/body image with attractiveness, both girls and boys may be at risk for developing an eating disorder. Young athletes are particularly susceptible to disordered eating and unrealistic body image.
In this interactive workshop, Dr. Pamela Carlton, creator and former director of the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital's Adolescent Eating Disorder Parent Education and Support Program, will discuss:
* General information on the different kinds of eating disorders
* Warning signs of eating disorders
* What to do if you're concerned that your child may have an eating disorders
* Things you can do at home to help your child develop a healthy body image
* Suggestions for positive ways to reduce stress (e.g., yoga, mindfulness)
Dr. Pamela Carlton is a board-certified pediatrician with sub-specialty training in adolescent medicine and almost a decade of experience treating adolescents and adults with eating disorders. Prior to starting her private practice and opening The Carlton Clinic, she was on the clinical faculty in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Carlton is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on topics related to eating disorders.
Parent Education Series events are free and open to parents, faculty/staff and community members. This event is sponsored by the La Entrada PTA.

WOODSIDE PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"The Mask You Live In," Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University
Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Performing Arts Center (PAC)
The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question: Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men and society at large? Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.
"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain."
- Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, and Producer of "The Mask You Live In" and CEO of The Representation Project
Watch a trailer of the film here.
Tickets are free, but advance registration is requested. Parents, high school students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!
Woodside Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the WHS PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be provided.

THE M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author
Monday, April 6, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no." That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes. Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. He is the author of two best-selling books, the memoir "Born Round" and "Ambling into History," a chronicle of Bush's rise to the presidency. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC and other networks.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available. For more information, email Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director.
