From the PrincipalPrincipal

Dear La Entrada Community,

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing, enjoyable time with friends and family during your mid-winter break.  It will rejuvenate the families, students and staff.  I also wanted to update the community on two new staff members at La Entrada.

We have brought a new teacher on board for the rest of this school year to provide additional support for our resource students--primarily students in 6th grade.  The new teacher is Lisa Kirkpatrick.  She is an experienced elementary and middle school teacher and a credentialed reading specialist.  She has an expertise in cognitive development of children and helping students work with their strengths to meet challenges. Her vision for supporting 6th grade RSP students is to bolster their confidence, and help them experience  success in school.  Lisa worked the first half of the year filling in for a teacher out on leave.  She did an excellent job and was well-regarded by all.  Lisa worked with 6th graders and knows some of your children already!

Angela Ping is our new 4th and 5th grade Computer Technology Teacher. She has been a classroom teacher for 14 years in the K-6 classroom and spent seven years of her teaching career starting, developing and teaching part time as a specialist in the Hillsborough School District's upper grade Design Innovation Lab and STEM/STEAM enrichment Lab.  Ms. Ping's expertise are in design thinking, and maker projects that utilize technology, building, and design as a means for students to express mastery of learning and create meaning via physical models, ideas, and projects.  She is presently pursuing her Masters in Educational Technology and Curriculum Development while working part time in our 4th and 5th grade Technology Lab.  Angela has two sons (16, 12)  who also love all things technology, but like their mother, also are accomplished musicians and lovers of sports and volunteering in the community at local shelters and Summer mission trips to orphanages in Ensenada Mexico. She is very excited to be a part of our La Entrada staff and to get to know the community, students, and staff.

Angela and I would like to invite you to meet her on Monday, February 23rd at 6:30 p.m. in her classroom.  She will be able to tell you more about her program and answer any questions you may have.

Enjoy the break!

Warm regards,

Shannon

Grandparents' Day is Coming to La Entrada Friday, April 10th!

This year Grandparents' Day is for La Entrada students (grades 4-8) and their grandparents.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the grandparents to visit their grandchildren at school and will include musical performances, art and technology showcases, tours of the campus, classroom time with their grandchildren and lunch together.  It's one of the best community events of the year and we hope the grandparents can join us.  The event is on Friday, April 10th from 10 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  We sincerely regret that we only have space for 450 people, so this event is for grandparents only. Parents, nannies and friends are welcome to participate by volunteering for the event!   Registration is now open so feel free to register your child's grandparents directly.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please email gpday@llef.org

An alarming number of young people who have never used conventional cigarettes are now using electronic "vaping" devices and student use of these products now surpasses the use of conventional cigarettes.  These devices are easy to hide and are often used with other drugs.  Despite widespread perceptions to the contrary, e-cigarettes do not deliver "harmless water vapor."

Come learn how young people are targeted to experiment with these and other "non-conventional cigarette" nicotine products and why we should all be concerned.  Examples of various products will be available to see.

Alissa Ralston has been active in tobacco education for the past 20 years. She has served as site coordinator for several TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) programs in both conventional and alternative high schools. Ms. Ralston has been the Project Director for the Tobacco Free Youth Project at Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) since 1999. She currently focuses on trainings around emerging nicotine delivery products such as e-cigarettes.

THE M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author

Monday, April 6, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Register online.

Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."

That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.

Frank Bruni
has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. He is the author of two best-selling books, the memoir "Born Round" and "Ambling into History," a chronicle of Bush's rise to the presidency. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC and other networks.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members.

Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.
