Welcome Back to School!  It is so good to see so many returning families, as well as our new La Entrada "Leopards"!

This new school year brings many new changes in our facility, including an expanded lunch area. Students have been enjoying our new lunch table area, a spacious area with enough tables to seat all students. Returning as our Lunch Duty Supervisors this year are: Mr. Chris Nichols, Mr. Joe Patane, Mr. Grayland Jones, Mr. Steve Presley, Mr. Antonio Dillon and Mr. Zerrette Powell.

Please keep yourself informed by reviewing our La Entrada Website Google Calendar regularly. All important events are listed on this calendar.

PIN (Parent Information Night) is this Thursday, September 4.  If you have to miss PIN, please know that all of our teachers have email and voicemail, and they are more than happy to make sure your questions get answered.

Our next big get together will be our Family Picnic on September 9th.  You can pre-order your dinner on the PTA website at www.laentradapta.org.

This is our second year hosting Digital TAT2 Presentations that focus on "digital natives" and their "digital reputations", cyber bullying prevention and other related topics around the benefits and challenges parents and children face today as they live in a 24 hour digital media world. Classroom presentations and grade level assemblies will be between September 8th and October 10th.

First Middle School Dance

September 19, 2014, 7:00 - 9:30 p.m.  This dance is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who have demonstrated appropriate school behavior up to the day of the dance.  Below are our guidelines.  Parents are asked to please remember to call the office during the day or email Mrs. Dineen (sdineen@llesd.org) if your child purchased a ticket but will NOT be attending the dance.

La Entrada Dance Guidelines

General Guidelines

Middle School Dances are opportunities to learn how to socialize with peers in a safe and chaperoned environment.  Students are encouraged to dress up for this event and use their best manners, especially when being asked by another student to dance.  If a student has been courageous enough to ask another student to dance, it would be polite to thank them for the invite and accept to dance at least one dance.   No one feels good about being embarrassed when their request for a dance is denied.

Behavior Expectations

  • Good manners are to be used at all times: "thank you", "please", or even "you look nice tonight!"
  • No running is allowed and shoes must stay on during the whole night.
  • The La Entrada Dress Code is to be followed at every dance.
  • No cell phone usage during the dance.
  • Students are to remain for the duration of the dance (7:00 - 9:30 p.m.), unless special arrangements have been made through the office ahead of time.
  • If a student has decided to not attend the dance after purchasing their ticket, a parent must inform the Assistant Principal or the school office so we do not worry about "no shows".

Boundaries

  • Students may be in the main hallway from Jensen Hall entrance up to the food table.
  • Students may use the middle school restrooms.
  • Students are encouraged to hang out in the MUR if they want a break from the dance music.
  • Areas Off Limits:  Lockers, Other Hallways, Blacktop, Parking Lot.
  • No student may leave the campus at any time without being signed out.

Food

  • Food/drink will only be allowed in the hallway - there is to be no food/drink in Jensen Hall.
  • Food/drink is meant as a snack and not a meal.

Chaperones are mandatory at all dances

  • Parents and staff chaperones are very important and make dances feasible.
  • Chaperones are to sign up with our ASB Teacher, Mrs. Rianda (trianda@llesd.org) and asked to sign-in upon arrival in the Chaperone Binder located in the MUR.  Each dance has two shifts; 6:45 - 8:15 p.m. and 8:00 - 9:30 p.m.  Chaperone duties are outlined in the Chaperone Binder.
  • Adult restrooms are located in the main office.  Feel free to walk through Mrs. Dineen's office to access the restroom.
  • Chaperones are asked to pay close attention to our boundaries, the food tables (no over-eating), remind students there is no running, and oversee the game room in the MUR.

Safety Reminders

Dogs on Campus
I am a dog lover, and I have a beloved dog, Duke, that is part of my family.  However, at La Entrada, we ask that people not bring their dogs onto campus during school hours (7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.), or to school events, like our upcoming picnic.  The reason for this is safety.  Even the best trained dog can behave in an unexpected way when around 700+ kids.  There may be a special time when a teacher invites furry friends for a visit, but please keep them off campus on a daily basis.

Drop off and Pick Up
Our community has done a superb job with the drop off and pick up procedures. Please remember that we can only make a right turn out of our parking lot.  If you are picking up your student, it is always good to let them know where to look for you.  It can be quite crowded when all the students get out, and it will keep things moving if students can find their parents quickly.  We hope that as many as possible will come to school on a bus, bicycle, or by walking.  If you do have to drive your child to school, please be sure to review the drop off procedures outlined in our handbook, available inside every student's Student Planner and on our website.

Bicycle Safety Tips

  • Be predictable.  This means following the same rules of the road as car drivers do.   This includes obeying all stop signs, traffic signals, and other traffic laws.
  • Ride on the right.  Please be sure to ride in the same direction as traffic.  Stay visible to traffic by not weaving in and out of parked cars.
  • Wear your helmet and buckle it every time.
  • Make eye contact with drivers.  This is particularly important at intersections and driveways.  Don't assume drivers see you.
  • You always have the option of getting off your bike and becoming a pedestrian.  This may be the safest thing to do at busy intersections.  Remember that anytime you use a crosswalk, you are a pedestrian.  You must walk your bike in crosswalks.
  • Do not carry things in your hands.  This includes iPods and cell phones.
  • All bikes, skateboards and scooters are to be walked on the sidewalk both coming and going via Altschul Avenue.  This is a one-way street with many parents dropping off and picking up students so safety dictates that students walk on the sidewalk from the District Office's driveway up to the bike rack and visa versa.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

  • Be alert: look for cars coming in all directions before crossing a street.  Also watch for cars backing out of driveways.  The drivers can't always see you.
  • Don't assume drivers see you: make eye contact with drivers at intersections and driveways.
  • Be predictable: follow the rules for crossing streets and intersections.  Wait until it is your turn.

Forgotten Lunches/Instruments/Homework

  • Forgotten lunches/instruments/homework can be dropped off in the front office.  Students are to check the office for their forgotten items, which will be stored on the shelf next to our communication boxes. Students are to check in the office either during a recess period or a passing period to pick up their items.  Instructional time will not be interrupted with classroom deliveries.
  • Our Homework Policy, located on our website, clarifies the procedure for requesting homework when your child is sick.  Below is a copy of the script, for your convenience.
  • Access to classrooms:  It is our policy to not have custodians unlock classrooms for any reason after school.  If your child has forgotten something in a classroom, they will need to wait until the next day to retrieve their item.

Policy for Requesting Homework When Absent Due to Illness

When a child is at home sick, we believe that s/he should rest at home and get well so that s/he can return to school as soon as possible. We also recognize that once a child is on the mend but not quite well enough to return to school, the child may want some work to do at home. If you would like to request work that your child can do while s/he absent due to an illness, call or email Marja Rudge or Marie Stosz by 9:00 a.m. on the day you wish to pick up the work. Requests made after 9:00 a.m. will not be available on the same day.  Any work provided by a teacher will be in a box in the office after 3:00 p.m. If someone other than a parent or sibling is going to pick up the homework, please let Mrs. Rudge or Mrs. Stosz know when the request for homework is made. We feel these procedures will be more efficient for both parents and teachers - parents will not have to individually contact teachers, and teachers will get only one request a day from the office instead of many requests scattered throughout the day.  The highest priority is for the student to return to school healthy and able to participate in class. In order to not overburden a child with make-up work, teachers will only request make-up work that is necessary in order for the student to be able to continue to be successful in class.  The office phone number is 854-3962. Email: mrudge@llesd.orgmstosz@llesd.org.

PTA News

You Made Our Day!
The first day of school that is. With the generosity and support of our parent community we reached 78% membership to the La Entrada PTA by the first day of school! That's up 14% from last year's total! Thank you to everyone who signed up during the InfoSnap process, our website, with checks, and good old-fashioned cash. It's not too late to join this incredible group of families--visit our website to join now!

Some other phenomenal membership facts:
- Parents of 612 out of 786 student supported the PTA
- Membership revenue increased more than $20,000 over last year
- Additional Outreach was more than $10,000

We ran extremely lean last year, funding programs at minimum amounts (many committee chairs and volunteers underwrote expenditures for their programs). We also had no residual funds to donate back to the school for special projects that benefit our children. This year we will be able to better support our amazing programs.

Thank you from the La Entrada PTA Board...and, more importantly, all of the students who will benefit from your support!

The Apple for the Classroom program is a way for parents to support their children's teachers directly.  All the teachers and specialists at La Entrada have been invited to create a "wish list" of items that would help to further enrich their classrooms.  Wishes may include classroom supplies, gift cards, subscriptions, or donations toward a special activity or field trip.

To view the lists, please visit our website.  Once at the site, select the list you want to view. Teachers' lists are divided into two sections, so you can choose to bring an item directly to the classroom or you can choose to make a donation via PayPal.

Thank you for supporting our teachers and enriching your children's experience at La Entrada.

Volunteers Needed for Hot Lunch

Help out with one of the best volunteer jobs in the school!  Serving hot lunch not only helps the school, but also gives you a chance to see your child, and get to know the other students and volunteers. Hot lunch shifts last about 40 minutes and you can sign up to help weekly, every other week, once a month or as an on-call sub. Click HERE for more information about shift times and to sign up. For questions about volunteering for hot lunch, please contact Stacy Molano (molano@pacbell.net) or Stacy May (stacy.may1967@yahoo.com).

Volunteers Needed for Photo Day

We need volunteers to assist on photo day.  The biggest need is Wednesday, September 11 from 8:10-10:00 a.m. or 10:20-11:45 a.m.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Julie Herlihy at volunteers@laentradapta.org.

Committee Chairs are needed for the below committees.
Keep in mind you can always partner with a friend and co-chair an event!
  • Holiday Faire - The Holiday Faire is a hands on craft fair in which all students create holiday gifts for their family and friends.  We have a fabulous group of ongoing volunteers for this event, but we need someone to coordinate and lead their efforts.  Last year's co-chairs are also happy to advise you in what needs to be done to make the fair a success!  The Faire typically takes about 5 days of prep time and will be held on December 5 this year. This La Entrada tradition is typically rated as one of the kids' favorite days of the year but without a leader, it won't happen this year, so please consider signing up!
  • Multi-Cultural Day - This is an opportunity for district families to share their cultural traditions with the students.  We already have plans for Chinese New Year.   If you would like to Chair this event and broaden it beyond Chinese New Year, we will appreciate your leadership in structuring this day for the students.

Please contact Ashley Banks or Sandie Timm at president@laentradapta.org if you are willing to chair!

M-A Parent Education Series
"The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence"
Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of Search Institute

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Recent and emerging research suggests that persistence or perseverance can improve students' academic motivation and increase performance. In fact, the evidence suggests that non-cognitive character traits like grit may be more predictive of future academic achievement than IQ or SAT scores. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and persistence, it is possible to significantly increase both.

Join us for an informative, engaging presentation with Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute. To bridge the gap between research and practice, Search has created a new resource called "the Perseverance Process" to turn the research on motivation and persistence into a set of explicit and actionable strategies.  Register online here.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free of charge, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. This event is made possible by generous funding from the Esther Ting Foundation.   For more information, contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series Program Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650-868-0590.

SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!  Spanish interpretation will be available.
