Project Cornerstone

This month's Project Cornerstone book is Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. It emphasizes taking time to learn about people before passing judgment, by making friends instead of enemies.  The narrator is teased by a 'new kid' named Jeremy.  He "took the bait" and called this person his #1 enemy. His dad offered to help with a recipe for enemy pie, whose chief ingredient turns out to be spending a whole day with his "enemy".  The narrator and Jeremy discover they have a lot in common and become friends.

At home:

  • Role-play how to start a conversation with someone new. This is great practice for when summer camps and new classes start up.
  • If you think you have enemies, what do you do as part of that relationship?  Do you bucket dip? How could you behave differently?
  • How can you be less of a target and more like an Upstander?
  • Is peer pressure involved?

As the most influential and caring adults in your own child's life, look for opportunities to help guide andpromote acceptance, inclusion, and forgiveness. These secret ingredients are the friendship boosters that will help your child connect with others, share interests, and build assets!

Thank you from the ABC Readers

M-A Parent Education Series
"WHO'S IN YOUR TEEN'S VILLAGE?"-Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President/CEO of Search Institute
Thursday, May 1, 2014, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Do you know who's in your teen's village? Who can your son or daughter turn to for help, advice, or assistance in a time of need? The more you think through your teen's support network, the better off they'll be when they hit a bump along the way. No parent can do it alone.

Join us for an exceptional evening with Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of the Search Institute of Minneapolis, MN. The presentation will include a keynote address from Dr. Pekel, a short video featuring the stories of M-A students impacted by an adult mentor, and a moderated Q & A with Lisa Medoff, Ph.D., Stanford University.

The Developmental Assets® framework created by Search Institute has become the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States and, increasingly, around the world. Search Institute's newest research-to-practice initiative focuses on studying and strengthening "Developmental Relationships" that help young people strive to be their best in school and life.

Dr. Pekel is an educator and administrator who has worked at the school, district, state, federal, and university levels. He holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University, a Master's in Education from Harvard, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Minnesota.

Tickets are free, but they will go quickly! Register today.

M-A Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District.  Special funding for this event from the Esther Ting Foundation. For more information, contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series Program Director, at  cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650.868.0590.  This event is intended for SUHSD parents, faculty/staff, and community members.

Community News
Stanford Splash
Splash is the program that brings high school and middle school students from everywhere to Stanford's campus for a two-day learning extravaganza. Classes are taught by Stanford undergraduates, graduate students, and other community members.

Student registration will open at 9:00 AM on Monday, March 10, 2014! Splash itself will be on the weekend of April 12-13, 2014.  To help you through our registration process, please download and refer to this Splash student registration guide.

Student registration is broken into two phases: (1) the class lottery and (2) the first-come first-serve (FCFS) class sign-ups. Please keep this in mind during the registration process.

=== PHASE 1: Class Lottery ===

The class lottery phase opens at 9:00 AM on Monday, March 10 and ends Tuesday, March 25 at 11:59 PM. After this deadline, the lottery will run, and students will be randomly placed into classes they have selected as those they are interested in taking. Because the lottery is random, we recommend you mark as many classes as "interested" as possible!

There is no incentive to enter the lottery as soon as it opens. The preferences of all students who enter the lottery before the deadline are considered equally. In other words, you will not be at a disadvantage if you enter your lottery late, as long as you enter by March 25!

=== PHASE 2: First-come First-serve (FCFS) Class Sign-ups ===

Once the lottery is run, student registration will re-open and all students will be free to enroll in remaining open spots of classes on a first come first-serve basis. This phase will run from March 28 to April 7. After April 7, students cannot change their schedule online except to cancel their entire registration for Splash.

=== Questions? ===

If you have any questions, you can refer to our FAQ here or send us an email at stanfordesp@gmail.com.

We hope to see you at Spring Splash on April 12-13, 2014!
