From the Principal's Office
|
A Message from Principal, Shannon Potts:
Dear La Entrada Community,
Safety Plan
At last month's School Site Council meeting, Sonya shared information about our district-wide effort to coordinate emergency/disaster plans. I would like to take this time to share some important aspects with you.
We are working closely with Menlo Park police and County Safety coordinators to ensure that our plans are sound and we are prepared to respond to varying possible scenarios.
If you arrive on campus and find no one in the halls and doors locked, please leave immediately and call the office to see if it is safe to enter. We may be running a drill, or we may actually be in a shelter-in-place or lockdown situation. We will not respond to knocks on doors if we are in a drill.
If we should be in a situation where we need to release students (severe earthquake, etc.), the perimeter of the campus will be secured and all parents should report to the District Office's parking lot for student pick up. If the location is different, staff will be out and able to inform parents where to report for student pick up. Please be patient. I assure you that your children will be safe and we will release them to you as quickly as we can.
We will use Global Connect, our emergency communication system, to alert you when necessary. It is important that you keep cell phone numbers and emails current. Go to InfoSnap to update your information.
Common Core Planning
As you know, the teachers are focused on learning about the California Common Core Standards and starting to implement an enhanced writing and math program. All of this takes time for teachers to meet, discuss, learn and plan together. As a result, there will be days when the teachers are out of the classroom to focus on these important initiatives. Teachers make sure that the substitutes have clear plans to carry on instruction in the classroom. District staff has worked diligently this past year to recruit and interview substitutes in order to have quality education continue in the teacher's absence. Your children directly benefit from the time teachers spend collaborating together.
State Testing
The state of California has adopted the Common Core Standards. With the new standards comes a new testing system. The first challenge we have with the new assessment is the technology skills required to be successful on the test. The state has published a practice test available to teachers, students and parents so that before the field test this spring, the students could experience the technology needed and the structure of the test. Please take some time to work with your children on the practice tests. They can be found at the following link: https://sbacpt.tds.airast.org/student/.
8th Grade Graduation Parent Committee
Graduation is in a few short months. We need a parent committee to start planning. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please email me at spotts@llesd.org. We will then arrange an organizational meeting.
9th Grade Registration
This past week all 8th grade students received a packet containing a summer reading list for 9th grade English, individual placement test scores for math and English, and instructions about how to sign up for their high school elective online. In the meantime, please feel free to peruse the ninth grade Sequoia High School District Course Information link for more detailed information: http://www.seq.org/+uploaded/file_1178.pdf. One of Sequoia High School District's counselors, Laura Duran, will be on campus on Tuesday, March 18, to help with any student concerns or questions. If you have any questions about the packet, please contact Ilene Bragman. (Ibragman@llesd.org)
Wishing you all a marvelous March!
Shannon

A Message from Assistant Principal, Sonya Dineen:
Safety First
Principal Potts has shared with parents some important aspects of our School Safety Plan. This is important material to review for you and your family. Our Safety Plan calls for a Safety Drill monthly. This month's Safety Drill will be on Monday, March 17, 2014 from 1:45pm-2:40pm.
The entire school will be practicing for a Disaster Drill and we will be following a special schedule. Lunch times will be: 4/5 Lunch = 11:00am-11:44am, 6-8 Lunch = 11:44am-12:28pm. This important drill takes about an hour to go through as we will review procedures for staff and students to follow in the event of a serious disaster, such as an earthquake. Please refrain from scheduling any doctor appointments or early pick-ups for this afternoon, if possible. If an early pick-up can not be avoided, you will need to report to Marja Rudge on the blacktop as our office will be closed.
I would also like to remind parents to plan on some extra time in the mornings for school drop-off so both you and your child will not be stressed when starting your day and everyone is able to be more patient in our school parking lot. Remember that the center lane in the Drop-Off/Pick-Up aisle is for through traffic and parents are not to leave their car unattended when in the Drop-Off/Pick-Up lanes.
Climate Committee
If you would like to be part of the La Entrada Climate Committee, I am planning a meeting for May 6, 2014, 4:00-5:00pm in Room 7. Our agenda will be focused on survey results from our latest Healthy Kids Survey and next year's Project Cornerstone discussions. Please email Sonya Dineen ( sdineen@llesd.org) to express your interest in being part of this committee. One meeting expected for the remainder of this year.
Spring Photo Shoot Day - March 27
This year we are going to have a new photographer, iclick smiles: www.iclicksmiles.com, come to La Entrada and shoot some Spring Photos. You will soon receive a communication from iclick smiles with details on how to reserve a photo shoot appointment for your child on Thursday, March 27. Please feel free to email me and share with me your thoughts on the quality of this new vendor.
Spring Conferences are scheduled for March 10-13
Parent-teacher conferences are designed so that information and questions can be shared. Open and ongoing communication is highly valued by our staff and community. For the spring, we are allotted three days for conferencing spread over the 4 scheduled minimum days. Each teacher will either pass out a schedule or have their availability on the online system. To make the most of this time, spring conferences are considered optional and can be requested by the teacher or the parent.
Conferences in grades 6-8...3rd Quarter Ends March 28th
There are approx. 45 spots for conferences during March 10-13. Teachers may have three times as many students as there are conference slots. (For example, a math teacher may have 150 students, but still only has 45 conference slots!) Conferences are optional and we ask that you keep in mind the limited slots and only sign up for a conference if you feel it very necessary.
6th - 8th Grade Teacher Conference Sign Ups will be Online
Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on March 10-13.
PTC Wizard is a web based parent/teacher conference scheduling system. Parents can create and manage their conference schedules in an easy and time efficient manner. Here is what you need to do to schedule a parent/teacher conference:
- Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26.
- Login to https://llesdms.ptcwizard.com
- You will first need to register and enter the names of your 6th-8th grade children.
- Follow the steps and the program will instruct you on how to choose a child, choose a teacher and set a time for the conference.
- When you have finished scheduling, a confirmation email will be sent to you.
- Conference availability closes at 2:00pm on the school day prior to the conference.
- If a teacher's time slots are full, please call the office. We will keep a wait list.
- If for any reason the online system does not seem to be working for you, please call the office and Mrs. Rudge or Mrs. Stosz will assist you.
- Because space is limited, please login and cancel any conference that you will not be able to attend. If you need to cancel after registration has closed for that day, you will need to call the school office.
- The school office number is 650-854-3962
No School Friday, March 14
There is no school this Friday. Enjoy the three day weekend!

Not 1, not 2, but 3 Episodes of KPAW
With the addition of the iMac lab and the iPads, Mr. Parker Kelly (Parkelly) has been able to expand his once-a-week studio, student-run, school-wide video broadcasts from 1 to 3 episodes per week. In addition to learning about the inner workings of a video-broadcasting studio, students are now learning how to broadcast via the iMacs and iPads. The addition of these two powerful tools has allowed the students to expand their video journalism skills and to explore additional news topics.
With the iMacs, students are producing a Tuesday episode which allows them to expand our student coverage at school. The student producers each choose a "news beat" on campus and gather information in order to produce a video segment. This is where the utility of the iPads really shines through; now students can collect notes, pictures and videos as they travel through campus to develop their stories. Once finished they must synthesize their information and edit on the iMacs using either iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Once all the students who are members of this production are finished with their video segments, they "stitch" them all together to produce a final production.
Students who use the iPads produce a broadcast for Wednesdays. Their focus is on current event topics. World, national, local, tech, and other topics can be explored while viewing a variety of news outlets-Time for Kids, CNN, TweenTribune and others-and then converted into short video segments edited with iMovie for the iPad. Finally, they can put their videos together by sharing them via Google Drive. To see how KPAW has changed, check out the website: <https://sites.google.com/site/kpawbroadcast/>
KPAW is grateful for all the support it has received from the Las Lomitas community and Foundation. Not only has it expanded our curriculum, it has allowed us to simulate real-world reporting.

TechEase (monthly Technology insights, ideas & updates)
Sharing/Learning with Your Children About How Electronics Work
Your child may spend hours a day staring at varied forms of screens, but have you ever talked with them about what's behind the tech, or wanted to explore those answers with your children? Stimulating curiosity about the tech behind the devices can be a wonderful adventure. Not only do children gain new respect for their favorite devices, but it peeks their curiosity, fuels that interest into building and constructing devices, and is something you can share as a family.
Maker Faires, "The Greatest Show & Tells on Earth": Share a Maker Faire weekend with your children which are held yearly in San Francisco and New York City. These attract nearly 50,000 kids and adults, who learn how to solder, take apart and put together gadgets, figure out how they function, and more (for info, visit MakerFaire http://makerfaire.com/. The San Francisco Maker Faire is May 17-18 at the San Mateo Event Center.
Ask questions that peek curiosity to "googling answers": "I wonder how that works?" "What do you think would happen if there you added an extra of this or that". All conversation openers and ways for children to want to explore answers using tech. How about exploring the website of "How Stuff Works" together, try projecting that to your TV for interesting learning and fun family times.
Tech can get some bad reputations as a babysitter in restaurants or a way to kill time on long drives, and in fact it is used as distractions often at the compromise of family conversation time. (Does anyone under 8 even know the license plate game now?)
But. It can also be used to build family conversations and shared experiences. I'll hope you try some of the above, or please share out other ways you find tech enriches your family on this google doc (http://tinyurl.com/n447fs3). It'd be great to share all the positive activities our families enjoy with their children.
Enjoy!

Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory
"The Diviners"
March 13-23
Evening and matinee performances
Tickets $10-$40
(650)851-8282 ext. 105
Set during the Depression, "The Diviners" is the story of a 14 year old boy named Buddy Layman who is deathly afraid of water, but who has a gift: He can divine water, which is crucial for his drought ridden town.
Haunting and beautiful, this powerful play has echoes of "Our Town" and "Of Mice and Men", but is definitely a fresh face that will have you laughing one minute, crying the next. Gorgeous gospel/spiritual style music richly underscores the production. Long after the curtain lowers, "The Diviners" will have you thinking about its poignant story and the deep questions it raises about law and grace, and the differences between blind faith and genuine love. Suitable for grades 6 and up.
