Project Cornerstone
What are your goals and dreams? Who can you rely on for support?
February's Project Cornerstone book is Long Shot: Never Too Small to Dream Big by Chris Paul.
The two main themes are following a dream and receiving support from family to achieve a goal.
Talk about support assets at home by asking these questions:
- How do you let family members know you love them? How do you send love messages?
- What is your favorite thing about your family?
- How can your family support each other more?
- What family activities would you like to do?
Learn about your child and each other's Positive Identity assets (their sense of purpose in life and positive view of our future) by talking about:
- What is your biggest dream?
- What matters to you? What sparks your interest?
- What do you care deeply about?
- What is your favorite thing to do, and how can I help you do it?
- What help do you need to reach your goals?
- Who will be your spark or goal champion (helps with taking steps to achieve a dream)
You are an essential positive force in helping your child feel empowered as s/he learns to dream and set goals. If you would like more information about sparks go to www.IgniteSparks.org .
As we support our children, we must continue to model for them what it means to have a sense of purpose in life. Together, we can create a stronger school community where all of our students are accepted and encouraged to dream.
Thank you from the 35 Project Cornerstone ABC Readers

LELE Around the World at Lunchtime, February 5
Have you ever seen a turbaned guy and wondered who he was?
Do you ever wonder why some people wear a turban?
What is your first thought when you see them?
Many Americans do not know they are Sikhs and misidentify them for someone else.
Sikhs have unfortunately been victims of hate crimes in America.
Please come to Around the world on February 5 at lunch time to find out who are Sikhs.

M-A Parent Education Series
Award-winning Documentary Film: "In 500 Words or Less"
Introduction by Alice Kleeman, M-A College Advisor
Thursday, February 6th, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Going to college is a rite of passage for many American high school students, but the process can be overwhelming: college fairs, SATs, tours, applications. And then there's the personal essay. How does a seventeen year old define herself to total strangers when she's only beginning to discover who she really is? And how can he or she be expected to do it in an essay of 500 words or less?
This honest film is a "must see" for any parent or student starting or looking ahead to the college application process. "In 500 Words or Less" takes you inside the lives of four very different students as they spend their last year with their families trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. The documentary serves as a portrait of four of the nearly 1.5 million families who go through this process each year. While race, geography and socio-economic status affected how they got here, their stories converge as they all juggle acceptance, rejection, decision-making and letting go.
"In 500 Words or Less" is highly recommended by NACAC, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, and featured at a recent national conference.
Ticket Registration: https://in500wordsorless2014ma.eventbrite.com/
Registration is FREE and Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the M-A PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District.
A great family event! Parents, students, and SUHSD community members welcome.
