In order to hold the Science Fair in January, we are in need of a Science Fair Chair(s) asap!  We had one...and unfortunately, that person is now not able to fulfill the duties required.  We have volunteers who can help, and great co-chairs from last year who are willing to train and pass the baton...we just need leadership from one or two of our fabulous science-loving parents!  Time is crucial in order to meet the county participation deadline.  Please contact MJ Crousore at volunteers@laentradapta.org if you are willing to help.

Project Cornerstone

Project Cornerstone's ABC readers read the book If the World Were Blind, by Karen Gedig Burnett (the author of Simon's Hook).  This book promotes a deeper understanding and acceptance of people's differences.  When a boy asked his grandfather why people had trouble getting along, they talked about how looking past physical attributes (not judging people for clothes they wear, cultural or religious beliefs, the way they look, or just being different) and instead to see and respect the true person underneath.

Teaching children to be open-minded and not judge others will help the community be a better and safer place for everyone.  Here is an informative Public Service Announcement video that you can show your child: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLIW8JWk1RI&NP=1 and discuss what it means to you as a family.

Thank you for being Upstanders at home and at school!

The Spelling Bee is back!

After losing the San Francisco Chronicle as the sponsor of our Spelling Bee, and thinking we would not have a school Bee this year, we just got great news: KPIX-TV & KBCW-TV have stepped forward to partner with the Scripps National Spelling Bee to bring the Bee to our community. The La Entrada Spelling Bee will take place Tuesday, January 21, 3:00 to 5:30.

Here's how it works:  All students are given a spelling test in class the week of November 18-22. (In the event of absence, make-up testing should be coordinated directly with the student's teacher.)  Qualifying students are identified based on the test scores , invited to the Bee, and provided a study packet. The Bee champion advances to the KPIX-TV & KCBS Radio AM & FM Spelling Bee. The Bee follows the rules of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Ways to prepare:

1.      Watch the movies Akeelah and the Bee and Spellbound to get inspired.

2.      Check out the spelling words at http://myspellit.com/.

3.      Quiz your family and friends on tricky words, and have them quiz you.

4.      Keep on reading!

NOTE: If you are interested in volunteering for the Bee, we have two opportunities for you:

1.       Attend the Spelling Test Grading Party: Thurs, Dec 5, from 9 to 11 am

Snacks! Camaraderie! Learning! Laughs galore!

2.      Volunteer at the Bee itself on January 21.

Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity! To sign up, contact Kari Mueller (Kari.rae@gmail.com) or Janelle London (jlondon@stanfordalumni.org).
