TALENT SHOW TRYOUTS THIS WEEK
Tryouts for the Annual Talent Show will be held during lunch Monday through Friday this week in Room 20. All potential acts are asked to perform only thirty seconds of his/her act in front of a panel of ASB student judges and Mrs. Rianda. Please check with Mrs. Rianda to see which grades try out on which days.
When selecting acts for the show, we make sure that there are at least two acts per grade level, there are a variety of different talents, and that both genders are well represented. Unfortunately, some acts will not make it into this year's show, but we highly encourage participants to try out for the Airbands in the spring where students lip-sync and dance to their favorite song. Acts that make it into the Talent Show will be posted outside the Room 20 patio door on Friday, November 8th. The Talent Show will be held on Tuesday, December 7th at 6:30 pm.

The Spelling Bee is back!
After losing the San Francisco Chronicle as the sponsor of our Spelling Bee, and thinking we would not have a school Bee this year, we just got great news: KPIX-TV & KBCW-TV have stepped forward to partner with the Scripps National Spelling Bee to bring the Bee to our community. The La Entrada Spelling Bee will take place Tuesday, January 21, 3:00 to 5:30.
Here's how it works: All students are given a spelling test in class the week of November 18-22. (In the event of absence, make-up testing should be coordinated directly with the student's teacher.) Qualifying students are identified based on the test scores , invited to the Bee, and provided a study packet. The Bee champion advances to the KPIX-TV & KCBS Radio AM & FM Spelling Bee. The Bee follows the rules of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
1. Watch the movies Akeelah and the Bee and Spellbound to get inspired.
2. Check out the spelling words at http://myspellit.com/.
3. Quiz your family and friends on tricky words, and have them quiz you.
4. Keep on reading!
NOTE: If you are interested in volunteering for the Bee, we have two opportunities for you:
1. Attend the Spelling Test Grading Party: Thurs, Dec 5, from 9 to 11 am
Snacks! Camaraderie! Learning! Laughs galore!
2. Volunteer at the Bee itself on January 21.
Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity! To sign up, contact Kari Mueller (Kari.rae@gmail.com) or Janelle London (jlondon@stanfordalumni.org).

READY, SET, CAN!
The students of Menlo-Atherton High School are kicking off their annual Canned Food Drive on
Tuesday, November 5. This is a chance for the greater community to rally around the growing number of San Mateo County residents who cannot afford enough food to provide for themselves and their families. According to the Second Harvest Food Bank website, 1 in 4 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are at risk for hunger. Many of them are children, and some are our neighbors, classmates, or acquaintances.
This year again, M-A has partnered with Second Harvest to ensure that families continue to have access to food sources beyond the Canned Food Drive. Supporting the Food Drive again this years are: Bianchini's in Ladera, Draeger's in Menlo Park; Key Market in Redwood City; Roberts Market in Portola Valley, the Safeways at Sequoia Station, on El Camino in Menlo Park, and in Sharon Heights, Trader Joe's in Menlo Park, and Whole Foods in Palo Alto. Here is how you can help the families in your community:
- When you are shopping for your family, please add a few extra cans to your cart and drop them into the Second Harvest Food Bank barrels. M-A students will be handing out the list of most-needed items requested by SHFB.
- Consider donating online at https://www.shfb.org/donateonline. Type "high school" in the Online Food Drive box and select Menlo-Atherton High School so that your gift can be properly credited to the M-A outreach effort.
Please contact feedourfamilies@mabearspta.org if you have questions. Thank you for your support!
