Art to Remember Fundraiser

The Visual and Performing Arts Department is happy to announce that the Art to Remember fundraiser is underway!  For this project, kids created an original, colorful drawing or painting. Families will be able to order products with their child's art printed on them.  Products include iPhone cases, coasters, notecards, and many other items.  The funds raised go directly to VPA classes for art materials, costumes and even musical instruments.  6th-8th Grade Art, Music and Drama students will be bringing home their order forms October 8th and 9th.  Order forms need to be returned to Mrs. Stosz in the office by October 15. Products will arrive back to school around Thanksgiving. Questions? Email Mrs. Ostrom at hostrom@llesd.org.

YES on S  2013
 yesons

Dear Las Lomitas and La Entrada Families,

Our support for Yes on S continues as we reach out to voters (thank you volunteers for your dedication and time)! We wanted to share with you a couple questions that sometimes arise in our conversations when we reach voters "on the fence":

What are the benefits of new, two-story, permanent buildings over portables?

1. More energy efficient buildings would reduce our utility bills by 15%.

2. Enable 21st century equipment and technology to protect the quality of our academic instruction.

3. Better accessibility for disabled students and adults.

4. Bring facilities up to current health and safety code standards.

5. Prevent further spread of portables into the outside fields and play areas.

If we need more space, why didn't we take back Woodland School?

1. Dividing into three campuses would cost the district an incremental 30% in operating costs each year (e.g., administration, specialists, buses, etc.).

2. We would still be going out for a bond to raise money to update the Woodland campus to bring it up to the current codes required for public schools.

3. The lease revenue we receive from Woodland School allows the District to pay staff salaries and to fund instructional programs.

4. The annual revenue from Woodland School funds approximately 7 teachers which would not be possible without such a continuous source of revenue.

Quality teachers and Small Class Sizes

The Foundation supports the cost of 15 core teachers at our two schools and enables the District to hire more teachers with advanced education and experience.  Our class sizes are an average of 21-22 at Las Lomitas and 24 at La Entrada. Your donation makes the critical difference.

Come hear from the experts! Don't miss Robin Mamlet and Christine VanDeVelde, co-authors of College Admission: From Application to Acceptance, Step by Step! College Admission is the ultimate user's manual and go-to guide for any student or family approaching the college application process. Featuring the wise counsel of more than 50 deans of admission, no other guide has such thorough, expert, compassionate, and professional advice.

Let's be honest: applying to college can be stressful for students and parents. But here's the good news: students have many great options. Robin Mamlet has been dean of admission at Stanford, Swarthmore, and Sarah Lawrence, and journalist Christine VanDeVelde has been through the process firsthand as the parent of a college applicant.

At this event, you'll get clear, comprehensive, and expert answers to all your questions:

   * The role of extracurricular activities
   * What it means to find a college that's the "right fit"
   * What's more important: high grades or tough courses
   * What role does testing play
   * The best candidates for early admission
   * When help from parents is too much help
   * Advice for athletes, artists, international students, and those with learning differences
   * How wait lists work
   * Applying for financial aid

Tickets almost sold out! Parents and students welcome.

Halloween Costume Drive - Give Families in Need a Special Treat

Please help the families of Haven House Family Shelter have a great Halloween by donating new or gently used costumes in all sizes (infant through adult).  The Girl Scout troops of Las Lomitas and La Entrada are working together with Suzanne Mitchell (La Entrada Technology Director) to collect costumes at both schools.  Look for the bins and Girl Scouts during morning drop off the week of October 7th through October 22nd. No need to even get out of your car, we will take it to the bin for you! ( bins will be out until 10/22).

Haven House, part of Innvision/Shelter Network, offers emergency and transitional housing for homeless families.  Each night almost 100 kids (infants to teens) call the shelter home while their parents are working to move them back to permanent housing.  Your donation of Halloween costumes will ensure that these families can participate in the fun of the season at a very difficult time in their lives!

Any questions: Contact Ginny Rader ginnyrad@me.com, Sarah Carey careysarah@yahoo.com, or Suzanne Mitchell suzannemitchell@gmail.com.
