What a wonderful first General Meeting we had on August 28th!  We saw so many new and old faces. If you did not get a chance to stop by, we wanted to give you a quick run down on the highlights of the meeting:

1. We introduced our newest board member, Debbie Siegel, who is taking over the Secretary position. She was officially voted in during the meeting. Welcome aboard, Debbie!

2. We introduced the Proposed Budget for 2013-2014. If you would like details on the budget, please feel free to contact either Sara Leake, Lisa Reid, or Laurel Timpson and we will be happy to discuss it with you.

3. We had a great presentation from MJ Crousore and all of your wonderful chairs she has gathered for the year.   For those of you that would still like to volunteer on committees, there are still many spots available and we would welcome your help.   We were also able to find chairs for some much needed spots, namely the Family Picnic - thank you, Patrina Donnelly -  and the Halloween Event - thank you, Jeni Mahon!  These programs are now moving ahead. We did have to announce some disappointing news: the Administration decided that due to Sponsorship pull out by The Chronicle, and in conjunction with scheduling conflicts resulting from the dropped sponsorship, the Spelling Bee will not take place this year.  All schools in San Mateo County were affected.  We are hoping that a sponsor can be found for next year, so that the spelling bee can resume.

4. Shari Guggenhime gave a membership report. The bottom line is that we need everyone to join. Our programs are run on the money we bring in this year. Our goal is to have 85% of our families join the PTA. If you have not done so, please join today. You can join above or below with a click of the button. Join by September 26th and be entered into a drawing for either a free week of Hot Lunch or free Spirit Wear.

Finally we would like to thank everyone for all of their hard work up to this point. We have such amazing parents!   We would also like to thank Pete's Coffee, El Camino, Menlo Park for providing us with free coffee!!!

See you in the Halls!!!

2013-2014 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE IS UNDERWAY!  PLEASE JOIN THE PTA TODAY!

We are only 50% of the way to meeting our fundraising goals.
We need every family to join in order to provide the quality programs your child enjoys throughout the year.  Without your support, we would not have the Holiday Faire, Science Fair, Family Picnic or Halloween Event (just to name a few).  Signing up is easy.  Visit the PTA website to sign up online using PayPal or pick up a form in the office.

Many thanks to the 176 La Entrada families that have joined already...

VOLUNTEER NOW!
Volunteering through PTA Committees is your door to participating on campus.  Sign up for your selected committee spots now by clicking here now.

Urgent Volunteer Needs
Hot lunch had a successful start, but we are still in need of volunteers.  We are currently short volunteers to serve hot lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays for both shifts and specifically 6th-8th on Thursdays.  We will not be able to provide this service without volunteers. Please consider signing up through the link above now!  Questions about Hot Lunch? Contact co-chairs Stacy Molano or Stacy May at molano@pacbell.net or stacy.may1967@yahoo.com.

The Family Picnic is off and running thanks to Patrina Donnelly, who stepped up to make sure we could bring this event back this year.  The picnic is scheduled for Thursday, September 26th, and Patrina cannot possibly pull it off alone.  She currently has only two other volunteers to help her, and she needs a team of 20 for the night of the event.  Please sign up above to help Patrina make this well-loved event another slam dunk for our school community!!!

We are excited to announce that the Apple for the Classroom program will be available online on September 3, 2013.

The Apple for the Classroom program is a way for parents to support their children's teachers directly.  All the teachers and specialists at La Entrada have been invited to create a "wish list" of items that would help to further enrich their classrooms.  Wishes may include art supplies, gift cards, books, or donations toward a special activity or field trip.

To view the lists, please visit our website at www.laentradapta.org or click here.

Once at the site, select the list you want to view. This is where you can then "pick an apple" -- teachers' lists are divided into two sections, so you can choose to bring an item directly to the classroom or you can choose to make a donation via PayPal.  All donations are tax deductible.

Feedback is appreciated. Please contact Julie Chandik with questions or comments about the Apple for the Classroom program.  For questions about the Apple for the Classroom website, please contact webmaster@laslomitaspta.org.

Thank you for supporting our teachers and enriching your children's experience at La Entrada!

NEW - MATH TEAM!!!

Attention math whiz kids in grades 5 through 8!  La Entrada is piloting a math team to compete in the MathCounts.org competition in February.  Although the MathCounts competition is only open to 6th through 8th graders, 5th graders will have a chance to join La Entrada's team and start practicing early. Tryouts for the team will be by written test. Parents and students are invited to an introductory meeting Wednesday, Sept 18 at 6:30 pm in the MUR. Come learn about the new math team!

Questions? Contact Janelle London: jlondon@stanfordalumni.org.

LA ENTRADA LUNCHTIME ENRICHMENT:

We are thrilled to be able to offer the La Entrada Lunchtime Enrichment Program again this year, but we cannot do it without your help.  This year we are planning on offering Book Club, Youth Action Council (YAC), Latin Club and Around the World, but each of these programs cannot be successful without the assistance of parent volunteers to help them run smoothly.  The commitment is one lunchtime a month so if you enjoy being on campus and spending time with our great students this is the perfect opportunity for you.  What are these clubs?

Book Club

Our fabulous librarian oversees our Book Club.  She provides standard book club questions and helpful advice for volunteers to use, as well as suggestions for book selections.  Students are grouped by grade level and each group meets during lunchtime to discuss their book while eating lunch together.  We need one to two volunteers per grade level to run each club.

Youth Action Council

Our amazing school counselors facilitate monthly meetings with students interested in participating in service activities.  There are teachers that also volunteer to participate in this program and parent volunteers complete the group of adults who guide and supervise activities.

Latin Club

The Latin Club, run by our wonderful middle school Latin teacher, is a great opportunity to prepare our students for the State Junior Latin Convention.  The lunchtime enrichment program prepares the students for the certamen competition in particular.  Together the students will practice monthly in order to be able to compete at the Spring Convention (for 6th, 7th and 8th graders only).  One or two parent volunteers needed.

Around the World

This program is great way to introduce our students to the customs and cultures of other countries Around the World.  Each session will be run by a parent volunteer who is able to present something special about their country.  We welcome any parent volunteers who have something special to contribute and a coordinator for this program would be a welcome addition as well.

For more information, or if you'd like to volunteer, please contact Esther Dicks or Virginia Rader.  We look forward to a fun array of lunchtime enrichment activities this year!

Volunteers Needed in East Palo Alto - An Hour a Week Could Change a Student's Life

We are looking for parents willing to volunteer in a K-4 classroom this school year.  Assist teachers with tutoring and individualized instruction much like you may have done in your own child's classroom, but these classes have no parents helping...no PTA. The schools are located in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park.  It's one hour per week with training starting September 6th. Our organization coordinates everything. To learn more about us, visit www.allstudentsmatter.org.  Have questions or want to sign up?  Contact Carolyn Blatman at CBlatman@aol.com.

National Junior Basketball League
Winter Basketball registration is now open at www.redwoodnjb.org.  Our focus is on skills-based instruction, personal growth, and positive competition for kids from 1st through 8th grades in Menlo Park, Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside, or East Palo Alto.  The season runs from November through February.

5th Annual Menlo Atherton Volleyball Community Clinic
The 2013 Volleyball skills clinic will be a ton of fun!  Meet and play with the current JV and Varsity squads at MA.  Players will learn new skills and hone their game under the supervision of head coach Ron Whitmill.  Last year the response was so great that this year we be decided to split up the age groups to ensure more productive clinics and games.  Friday, September 27th we welcome 4th/5th/6th grades and Friday, October 4th we welcome 7th/8th grades.  Clinics are from 4:00-6:30pm in Ayers Gym on the MA Campus. $30 in cash or check made out to MA Girls Volleyball will be accepted. We always bring a trainer aircraft and a buddy box system so anyone can try.

Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory (PVTC) offers THEATRE CLASSES this fall!
PVTC's classes are open to students of all skill level, novice to experienced in Pre-K through high school. In addition to teaching acting skills, these classes build self-confidence and encourage collaboration with peers. Each week, students learn about theatre through well-loved theatre games and creative acting exercises. Students also rehearse a short play that is performed at the end of our 8-week session for family and friends. One of the highlights of the performance, in addition to the fact that all students get lines, is using simple costumes, props, & lighting, and performing the play on a real stage.  Our fall theme is "Folktales, Myths, and Legends," so all of our short plays will center on classic stories of adventure and heroism. Thursday classes begin September 5. All other classes begin the week of September 9. Register online at
www.pvtc-ca.org. Questions? Email info@pvtc-ca.org.
