FUND A NEED 2013 - DIGITAL LITERACY

  FAN2013

Our Fund-A-Need this year is to outfit a Media Lab at La Entrada and an iPad Cart at Las Lomitas to promote digital literacy. The media lab will be designed to inspire learning, creativity, and critical thinking through experimentation with digital and traditional media.  Students will have access to new electives like Digital Animation and Digital photography, as well as have enriched core courses.  At Las Lomitas, the iPad cart will give young learners access to a variety of educational content through a new medium. Fundamentally, your support in Fund-A-Need will help prepare our students for high school, college, careers and beyond.  Please invest in technology resources for our children's campuses-donate at www.llef.org/FAN or at the auction on May 18th.

THANK YOU TO ALL 4TH GRADERS for donating $4,890 to the Foundation through the 4th grade Math Facts Marathon!  Their hard work has earned the school district significant funding for the next school year.

From the Principal
Greeting La Entrada Community,

As we move into the 4th quarter and near year's end,  I wanted to communicate a few items:

1.  I will conducting a tour for new families to LA Entrada on Monday 5/20.  It will begin with an overview of the campus and our programs we offer and end with a tour of the campus. If you know of new families to La Entrada, those at Las Lomitas but without siblings at LE or new in the community, please pass on the information.

2.  As the weather warms up, more students are riding their bicycles.  Please remind them to wear a helmet to and from school.  The warm weather also brings on the potential for more dress code violations.  Please refer to the school handbook, so that we avoid dress code incidents.

3.  STAR Testing is around the corner.  We will be testing all 4th - 8th grade students starting May 6th and will run through May 17th.  We are aware that field trips are planned for the second week of testing and we have created grade level schedules that will accommodate the events.  Please avoid Dr. appointments and other absences during those two weeks so that all of the students can participate in the testing

Las Lomitas Elementary School District is seeking qualified candidates to serve as substitute teachers.  Please call the District Office at 650-854-6311 for more information.

Have a great week,

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE EARTH DAY?

April 22nd 2013:  The celebration of Earth Day began in the United States in 1970.

How will you celebrate?  Consider the following ideas taken from Eco Kids:

  • Schoolyard or Community Clean-Up
  • Plant Native Trees and Flowers
  • Make Bird Houses and Feeders
  • Wear Brown or Green - Admittedly, Choicelunch is partial

How Choicelunch Celebrates: Choicelunch is a Certified Green Business.  From developing our own eco-conscious hot food tray for school lunch to the introduction of compostable 'baggies', we continue to push the sustainable packaging envelope.  This year we partnered with a local CA company, World Centric, who makes a plant fiber tray made from annually renewable resources like sugar cane fiber, wheat straw fiber and corn. On April 22nd, celebrate this bio-based tray at lunch when we serve Chicken Taquitos!  Happy Earth Day!

Hot Lunch Volunteer Needed for Grades 4/5 Thursdays, 12:00 - 12:30.  Please email Julia at gershenberg@gmail.com if you can help.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK IS COMING!!!

It's time to celebrate our amazing La Entrada team of teachers and staff!!  During the week of  May 6 - 10, we will show them our appreciation with heartfelt letters from the students, special treats, and a delicious luncheon.  Here's a quick peek at what the staff will have in store for them:

  • Monday - Breakfast and Banners
  • Tuesday - Luncheon catered by Quadrus (a huge THANK YOU to the Sakrison Family!)
  • Wednesday - Donuts and Coffee
  • Thursday - Popcorn and Sweets Galore for the Stars of La Entrada
  • Friday - Wake up with the Coffee Cart

In addition, we are going to fill their mailboxes each day with letters of appreciation from the kids. Here's how you can help: PLEASE have your child write thank you / appreciation notes to the teachers and staff they know (they should think of their core teachers, specialty classes, bus drivers, office staff, counselors, custodians, etc).  We would like each member of the La Entrada team to have an overflowing mailbox each morning!!  We know this will be their best treat of all.   There will be a place for the kids to deposit the letters in front of the school throughout the week.

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

"The Culture of Perfectionism"

Ana Homayoun, author of The Myth of the Perfect Girl

Thursday, May 2, 2013, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

M-A Center for the Performing Arts (PAC)

Join us on May 2 for a special presentation by Ana Homayoun, M.A., on "The Culture of Perfectionism." Ms. Homayoun is the founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting and author of That Crumpled Paper was Due Last Week and the newly-released book, The Myth of the Perfect Girl: Helping our Daughters Find Authentic Success and Happiness in School and Life.

In her important new book, Ana Homayoun sheds light on the challenges facing our teens today in light of today's ever-increasing mix of technology, socialization, and learning. In our achievement-based culture, many of our teens are doing remarkably well, excelling in honors classes and sports and attending top colleges in ever greater numbers-but beneath the surface, many are stressed-out, overwhelmed, and burnt-out as they strive to achieve an unobtainable sense of "perfection."

Kepler's Books, a Community Partner of the M-A Parent Education Series, will offer copies of "The Myth of the Perfect Girl" at the event. Sign up now - tickets will go quickly!

REGISTER AT: http://menloathertonanahomayoun.eventbrite.com/

This event is free and sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be offered.

For more information, please contact Charlene Margot, M-A Parent Education Series Program Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650.868.0590.
