Update on Technology Use at La Entrada   

One of the goals of the LLESD Strategic Plan is to promote 21st century teaching and learning in the classroom. There are many ways to bring creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication to the classroom, but we believe that placing mobile technology in the hands of highly professional teachers and eager, digitally-native students is an amazing way to promote 21st century teaching and learning.  

 

Beginning in April 2013, three classes of sixth grade students will have an iPad to use at school in an exciting "iPad Pilot Program".  Students will use this iPad both at school and at home to organize their work, communicate with their teachers and do collaborative assignments using productivity tools. 

 

This pilot program will be carefully evaluated using teacher anecdotal records, surveys, and grade/assessment data.  If the pilot is successful, we will soon begin the planning process to expand the program into other grades so that we will be ready to launch more widespread iPad/Tablet usage by students and teachers in August.

We are currently making plans for the 2013-14 school year and a part of the planning includes staffing, facilities, and educational programs.  
 
In order to do the very best job we can, we need every family to complete the 2013-2014 Enrollment Planning Survey here by March 11. Please note that graduating 8th graders do not need to be included.

More Reflections Awards 
In addition to the two winners that were previously announced that were advancing to State competition, we have a few others that won recognition, but will not advance to State.

Science Fair
Congratulations to the 13 entries from La Entrada that moved on to the San Mateo County Science (STEM) fair.  The fair overall had 314 projects from 44 schools.  La Entrada had a number of special awards and winners.  Most impressive was Jack S. who came in first place in 7th grade Materials Science category, with a project titled "the absorptive power of the Chia seed".  He has now qualified to move on to the San Francisco Bay Area science fair and also the California State Science Fair.

A NOTE FRON THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

In February, a group of students met for La Entrada's first Expect Respect workshop. Expect Respect was designed by Project Cornerstone to identify student leaders who can influence others and promote a more caring, inclusive and safe school environment.  In the first Expect Respect meeting, the students began brainstorming a school site specific action plan for improving student to student and campus climate relationships.  The students came up with many creative and practical ideas!  We will be meeting again March 11th to put some of their ideas into action. The ideas we put into action for this school year will fall into the assets that the Climate Committee discussed as being top value priorities for La Entrada. These assets are: Service to Others, Youth as Resources, School Engagement, Parent Involvement in School, Creative Activities and Caring School Climate. After the Expect Respect group meets again, I will let everyone know the projects we have decided to take on for the remainder of the school year!

The Task of Becoming a Teen by Charlotte Villemoes, LMFT Site Director at Woodside High School

 

After years of challenging teen years my son has finally emerged again, and much to my delight I am discovering he was hiding a real human being in there, someone who is able to communicate and show some basic interest in other people, including his mom. Now that the sleepless nights are at a distance, it has become a little easier for me to see what caused all the pain and worry. My son was simply busy, busy with tasks every single teen is required to master whether they are aware of it or not, whether they want to or not.

 

First of all teens need to adjust to all the many physical changes puberty brings. Growth spurts, new curves, breaking voices, a strange face decorated with pimples. A vast majority of adolescents spend hours worrying over their looks, many feel ugly. At the same time raging hormones are putting sex front and center in their lives, adding a whole new dimension in life, among others giving them the task to realize and come to terms with their sexual orientation.

 

Ready or not, teens also have to separate from their parents. They do this in all sorts of creative ways, experimenting with clothes, body art, politics, drugs, and music, seemingly anything to drive their parents crazy or push them away. As challenging as it is for everybody involved, these are actually steps they need to take in order to prepare for the task of becoming independent individuals once adolescence is over. By pulling away from their parents' influence, they are trying to decide how they want to live their own lives, what values they want to adopt.

 

During adolescence, teens need to develop a social network and learn to navigate the social scene without parental oversight. This is the time where they build their first true friendships based on shared interests and values, and also the time where they start learning more about romantic relationships, - a task that often comes with confusion, hurt feelings, and late night heart aches. In the midst of juggling all this, they are also expected to start defining their vocational and educational goals or at least have an answer ready when the well-meaning adults in their lives ask: "So what do you want to do after high school?" An honest answer would be: "I just want to get rid of those damn pimples!", but instead we expect them to rattle off some college and career choices.

 

Added to all this are of course the basic tasks of going to school almost eight hours a day, doing homework for at least two, performing miscellaneous after school activities, helping with - or fighting over - chores at home, as well as participating in family activities with at least one ear open. To top it off, research shows that teen brains are undergoing dramatic structural changes, to the point where they deserve wearing a sign saying "closed during remodel". No wonder they shut down or act out or do a little bit of both.

 

Based on all this, my advice to fellow parents is to take a deep breath, give your teen a hug, exercise your sense of humor, practice patience and good faith: Chances are your teen will emerge as a human being, just like mine did.

 

I am sharing this to let you know there is hope, so hang in there.

La Entrada's 5th grade Girl Scout Troop 33179 Fundraiser
Eat at Lutticken's After 5 from March 10-16 and help local animal shelters. La Entrada's 5th grade Girl Scout Troop 33179 will earn their Bronze Award this year by raising awareness and doing fundraising for 2 no-kill animal shelters in our community: Nine Lives Foundation and Pets in Need. Our first activity will be a fundraiser from March 10-16 with Lutticken's After 5 restaurant on Alameda which will donate a percentage of their proceeds to our cause. Come by for dinner, and help us help the homeless pets in our area. We will also be collecting pet supplies during a school drive April 8-12th. Thank you!
 

Atherton Mat Club 

Boys and girls who are interested in an energetic, social, and fun after-school activity should consider the Atherton Mat Club! Starting April 5 and running through May 3, the Menlo-Atherton High School wrestling team will introduce middle schoolers, 6th through 8th grade, to various mat exercises and activities. Some of the activities include wrestling, relays, mat ball, and various team challenges. Sessions will be held on Fridays, 4-6PM, and Saturdays, 8-10AM, in the M-A HS wrestling room. In a positive and fun atmosphere, sessions will help participants develop good strength and fitness habits and instill positive character traits: self-confidence, leadership, good sportsmanship and perseverance.

Atherton Water Polo Club

Are you a guy who thinks you might want to play water polo in high school? Atherton Water Polo Club, coached by Menlo-Atherton boys' varsity head coach Giovanni Napolitano began their spring session on Friday, February 22nd at the M-A pool. Practices are currently scheduled Monday and Friday 6-8pm and Saturdays 10-12pm. A Tuesday/Thursday option can be added if enrollment supports it.
