From the Principal

Welcome to 2013!

While it may be hard to believe, half the school year is almost over!  Friday, January 18 will be the last day of 2nd Quarter, and Monday, January 22 is the 1st day of 3rd Quarter.

The end of 2nd quarter is also the end of 1st semester.  This means that there will be schedule changes for students in 7th and 8th grade.

For 7th -8th grade parents:

On Monday, January 22, students will report to their current 1st period teacher.  They will receive their 2nd semester schedule and be given time to report to their new class (if they have one).

There are a few reasons that your child's schedule may have changed for 2nd semester:

  1. To accommodate an elective change.  Sometimes it is necessary for other classes to switch periods because of a change in electives.
  2. To accommodate participation in a support program.
  3. To help balance classes

There are also a couple of reasons that your child's schedule may change in the first few weeks of the new semester:

  1. If your child wants a schedule change, s/he should pick up a schedule change form in Room 7.  When the form is filled out and returned with a parent signature, Mrs. McDonough (our counselor) will review it and see if it is a change that is possible.  Mrs. McDonough will call your child into office to review whether or not the change is possible.  Please note that many changes are not possible due schedule complexities.
  2. Mrs. McDonough may call your student into the office to mandate a schedule change that is necessary to better balance classes.  We attempt, during the first few weeks of the new quarter, to move some students out of larger classes and into smaller classes.  If one of these changes occurs to your child, please know that it is to the benefit of all our students to balance the classes as much as possible.
Open Enrollment for 8th graders:
A reminder that all 8th grade students that would like to go to MA but do not live within the MA boundaries have to fill in an open enrollment form and submit it to the Sequoia Union High School District.  If you are not sure if you live in MA boundaries or another school, please go to the SUHD website and check.  Go to www.sequoiadistrict.org and click on Parents> Boundary Search.  Type in your street and if any high school but MA is listed, you must fill in an Open Enrollment form.  If you have questions, please contact the office.

Address Verification for 8th Graders:
In the past Sequoia Union High School District came to La Entrada for address verification.  They are no longer offering that service.  Each eighth grade parent is required to go to the Sequoia Union High School Distirct Office to verify your student's address before June 1st, 2013.

WHAT TO BRING: In order for address verification to be complete you MUST bring ALL of the following documents:

  1. Photo ID (may be out of state or country)
  2. One of the following ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS with parent/guardian name and address:
    1. Current, valid vehicle registration
    2. State or federal tax return filed within the past 12 months with W-2 forms attached
    3. Two utility bills with the correct address
  3. One of the following ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS with parent/guardian name and address:
    1. Property Tax Bill with parent name & property address, indicating home owner's exemption
    2. Rental or Lease agreement with manager or owner's name and phone number
    3. Insurance documents, letters from social services or from the court may be considered

NOTE:  If renting a room or living with another family, you should bring a letter from the homeowner or landlord stating that the family is residing with them and you should also bring the documents in homeowners' name.  A home visit will be done to verify your address.  If you have special circumstances please speak to one of the District representatives at the event to determine how we will move forward with your verification.

Warm Regards,

Shannon Potts

Please support this new program with a few hours of your time and learn about different careers for dinner time conversation at the same time. To volunteer, please contact Linda Itskovitz at litskovitz@gmail.com.

Our ABC readers read the book "Have you Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud to the 4-6th grade classrooms. This heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves. The most important thing about being a bucket filler is remembering to fill buckets.  With your family, consider answering a bucket filler questionnaire (here) or having fun with a bucket filler word puzzle (here) to encourage the habit of bucket filling.  This book builds development assets from the Support and Social Competencies.  More information about this book and others that have been read can be found on the La Entrada School Home Page.

SAVE THE DATE: The author of Simon's Hook, one of our ABC books presented in the fall, will be talking to parents on Wednesday, January 23 at 9:00 am.  Come meet Karen G. Burnett and hear what she has to say about teases and put-downs.  More information to follow.
