Foods that Sabotage a Good Nights Sleep

The foods you eat for dinner or shortly before bed can prevent you from getting some much-needed sleep. We know how important sleep is as an aid in losing weight and it provides a myriad of other health benefits. Here's what to avoid for up to several hours before turning in if you want to sleep better and wake rested.

Tomatoes_ Rich in tyramine, an amino acid that triggers the brain to release norepinephrine, a stimulant that boosts brain activity and delays sleep.

Celery- A natural diuretic that may keep you up simply from a full bladder.

Cheese Pizza- Foods that are high in fat or fried are harder to digest and will make sleeping more difficult.

Alcohol- Even if a glass of wine helps you to fall asleep, it robs you of a deeper REM sleep late in your sleep cycle.

Candy- Candy that is high in sugar will interfere with sleep because of your insulin response. What goes up must come down and the spikes in your glucose levels can disrupt a restful night.

Dark Chocolate- Most people don't realize that dark chocolate can contain caffeine and if you are caffeine sensitive that can wreak chaos on your sleep cycle.

Beans- The body has a hard time digesting beans, so stomach-rumbling gas pains will keep you from a good night's sleep.

Hot Sauce- If used within a couple of hours of sleep your body may experience heart burn or reflux which will certainly keep you from falling asleep.

Carbonate Soft Drinks- Check the label. Even lemon -lime can contain caffeine that will interfere with sleep.

A large high protein dinner- Foods high in protein and marbled fats, such as steak and roast beef, are slow to digest. If your body is busy digesting food, there's more of a chance that you'll have a restless night.

Brussel Sprouts and Broccoli- So important for good health, but it is recommended that you eat these at least three hours before sleep to eliminate the gas from the digestive process that may keep you awake.
